Curiosity killed the cat, while satisfaction did bring her back, she was still down one life.

      I was a 1 until 2004

I thought for years that the islands were all commercialized and I really didn't have it as a priority to go. Friends asked us to join them in 2004 on Kauai at their Pahio Shearwater t/s and got hooked. We've been back every year since and always find new things to do and see each time we go. I love to snorkle and have my own equipment, but have also done the dive trips. You have to be a bit adventurous. Last year I walked past Pierce Brosnan on the Hanalei Bay beach! It's not all about food, hardly! I'm planning on trip #7 a year from now.

We don't fit any of your categories. We have been once, loved it and do not plan to go back. But you never know. It took me a long time to get my husband to go (grueling flight) so we did 4 islands in 3 1/2 weeks. I feel I have seen Hawaii now. We return to Puerto Vallarta every year - that is "home" to us.

Was stationed on Oahu for a year, when it first became a state. Loved it! Soooooothing!!

Went back 17 years ago. Was on the BI for two days, then Oahu for 12. Enjoyed touring around and I agree with those of you that know that feeling.

The commercialization and urban squalor has taken it's toll, but we would like to return. Maybe Kauai and Maui
next time, in hopes of recapturing the charm.

If we schedule a return, we would attempt doing something on the west coast on either end of the Hawaiian round trip. The flight from here to Hawaii is not going to happen. Our bodies won't tolerate such.

For those of you that have been to both, leaving the flight out of the equation, which do you prefer, Hawaii or the Caribbean?

That's close to our situation. I've always enjoyed my trips there, but the plane ride seems to get longer and longer(even with the occasional upgrade )

IMHO, the Caribbean is nice but somehow doesn't quite measure up to Hawaii. I think it's the polynesian atmosphere.

I went to Kauai years ago and loved it. Haven't been back to Hawaii since then, but am trying to talk my husband into it. I wish it weren't so far away.

I have been to Hawaii once, many years ago, and my wife has been 3 times. We are going back in October 2010 and August 2011.

                  Beyond the flight....

I grew up in the Northeast, but I've lived in Hawaii for many years and I love it! Those who speak of the "feel" of Hawaii get it! The flight is long, I agree....I deal with it when I go to New England for the fall colors, but your reward is Hawaii! I do think perhaps that people start with Waikiki, thinking that's the essence of Hawaii, and then are very disappointed. Waikiki is built up and busy, although Oahu as an island has a lot to enjoy. I always encourage friends to visit at least one neighbor island. My favorites are Kauai and the Big Island, and I have timeshares on both......do get out of the "busy" areas and enjoy the countryside and the people of Hawaii.....they are special! I know I'm very lucky to live here!

We have never been before but are going for 2 consecutive weeks this year. We will be spending a week at Kona Hawaii and another week at Waikiki in April.

                      Love Hawaii

We have been to Hawaii four times and plan on visiting again. We have visited Oahu, Maui, Big Island, and Kauai (twice). Each island is special in its own right. Our last visit was to the Shearwater in Princeville, Kauai in April 2009. Everyone should visit Hawaii at least once in their lifetime.

                        I am "c"

done Oahu, then Maui. We want to do Kauai next, but debating if we should do our usual 2 weeks there. Also, it will be after 2011 - but then will the trip of the islands come before DisneyWorld or a 2nd trip to DC ?

The DW tells me it is very expensive to do anything and we can do better things with our money.
If you go to Oahu, make use of deals like Costco for food and get a decent car rental, maybe score some airline tickets using FF miles, and don't splurge on everything you see or hear about, then your wallet won't even feel much. Our two week Oahu trip was less then a drive down south (from San Francisco area) for a week trip in the LA area - Disneyland and other attractions really killed us!

Ever heard the saying about how the younger one is, the less 'polluted' his mind is from the world thus the more "true" his views are, almost like having an extra "sense" of things?

Anyways, I cannot forget the time we arrived at Honolulu Airport on our first trip to the Islands. As we exited the indoor area of the airport with our luggage in tow and walked across a partially covered outdoor walkway, I took in the moment glad to be off that long plane ride, had no lost luggage, and finally getting to enjoy a peaceful moment with the cool tropical, December breeze lazily blowing by and the distant palm trees gently swaying in the overcast skies...my son happily exclaims, "Dad, I want to stay here forever!!!"

We've travelled many places since he was an infant, and he has only said this once in his life (so far ).
