  • Massanutten + Williamsburg in Jan 2013?

    Hi there US experts,

We plan on staying at Massanutten in January 2013.

Should I add Williamsburg also or is one of them enough? Is Williamsburg any good to visit in January?

    Thanks!

Why are you going here in Jan? iT IS WAY TO COLD in Jan in willamsburg with not much going on then. iF you are looking to Ski I would be looking North East since you will be in NY.

Has to be Jan because that's when our kids are off school. No skiing, just seeing the country.
So 1 wk in Massanattun then where else? Within driving distance to NY. When you say North East, which state? Will check for exchanges.

Nice, but a ski location in January....almost to Canada.

How about one of the Wyndham resorts in Washington DC instead of Massanutten the week after NYC? - very interesting city and very doable with Worldmark and/or RCI as you will be there the week AFTER school vacation. Many/Most attractions are free. Can day trip to Williamsburg VA if u like, about 2.5 hours.

DC is 4 hour drive from NYC.

And then, something a bit warmer.....with TSs????

Or, do Massanutten after NYC for outdoorsy activities/Blueridge Mountains and then do Washington DC and then back to NY to fly to where???

You could check out of Massanutten - drive to Williamsburg (under 3 H) tour there that day, stay at a motel overnight, tour some more and drive up to DC and check into Wyndham there....vacation and then drive back to NYC to fly again???

Two days in Colonial Williamsburg really should be enough - JMHO - http://www.colonialwilliamsburg.com/

Ok, so will check out Wyndham resorts in DC. Didn't know there were any. Thanks Pat. Frank, I keep that in mind but I'm not sure we'll be doing any skiing. Thanks.

Old Alexandria and National Harbor - tons of stuff to do in DC, much of which is free.
IreneLF just had an Australian friend visit here with her and that is where they went.

I agree with Pat on this one. January can be yucky but there are tons of indoor free things to do in DC. You could spend a week at the smithsonians. Think you can still tour the bureau of printing and engraving (paper $) http://dc.about.com/od/museums/a/BEP.htm ,etc.

Old Town Alexandria is more convenient to DC via Mass Transit.

If you can't get those Spence has his condos and I know one of them sleeps 8.

ETA- WYN OTA largest units are 2BR/6 and I have yet to see more than one ever on line in RCI even off season, although Wyndham Nat'l Harbor I do . You could rent from a Wyndham owner if you are not one yourself. Neither of the DC properties can be gotten thru WorldMark .

Thanks Lawren, great tips. Washington DC sounds like it would suit us for a week. Have put a request in so will see what comes up. Will PM Spence and ask him what he has.

Rickster, thanks. There's nothing in RCI for Smuggs at the moment and I'm not sure we'd want to spend the week skiing as we'd really like to see the sights. But will keep it in mind.

If your not going to ski then DC is nice to do for a few days. Since it will be cold there and off season and the fact that getting a TS is hard since there is only 2-3 in the area. I would bid on 2 rooms per night on priceline. At that time you might be able to get a 4 star for $50-60 a night per room. All you need is 3-4 days.
Another area you might consider is Lake Placid. Lots of fun things to do there at that time including going on the Olympic bob sled. That was a rush when I did it and it is something I or my family will nver forget.
