We had neighbors who lived on a corner and never shoveled their walkways. It was very dangerous because pedestrians had to walk out into the street (which had been plowed), walk in the street to get around the corner, and then climb back over a big pile of snow to get back to the next neighbor's shoveled sidewalks. But in the meantime, you were in the street with cars slipping and sliding around.

You have to dig out your driveway so you can get your car out of it. If you don't need your car, you can leave your driveway till the spring thaw.

Now about basements. We have basements because we have hard freezes in the Northeast. The foundation of the house has to go below the frost line, which is a few feet down around here. Once you're digging that far, they might as well dig a little farther down and make a basement rather than a crawl space. That depends on the water table--most people around here can't go down to, say, eight feet without hitting water, so that's why basements in this area are maybe seven feet high or even lower.
Oh this is wayyy too much work.
I'd definitely live in a condo if I lived up there.
How do you guys do it?
There is no way I'd be shoveling snow at 5am.
    Hell no!!!

We usually hire guys to do it, if there's a big storm. They come with shovels and ring the bell, you negotiate a price, and they go do the work for you. We don't have that much frontage, so it's not a huge expensive job.

We have about 2 feet here. There are cars stranded all over the LIE at our exit. Just sitting there in the middle of the highway. Unheard of. The expressway is cleared through exit 51 so it should reach my exit in a few hours. Pat I have no idea when they will be able to clear all the way out east to you.
and then there is the fog....because it is so much warmer today - who can see where they are going at this point!

True....Its crazy fogy out today. I just got back in, and could hardly see where I was going. Dangerous driving! Still, its better than the snow.

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

My street has a foot of slush in it. The storm drains are covered in the snow piled up by the plows so the water from all the rain has nowhere to go. Oh, it's going to be a long week... and they are forecasting more snow for Wednesday night into Thursday!

                  Thanks Wacky!

Funny...we don't have sidewalks where I live. I miss them. I did have to "dig" my son's truck out once-not anything like this-but an unusually heavy snow for where I live. He was trying to go to a Dr.'s appointment and I called them to let them know he *might* be a little late. They told me if he didn't get there in 15 mins they would cancel the appointment. I remember thinking really? This is Southern California, we don't even KNOW how to dig out let alone drive in this...I hope there is more compassion for others where all of you are. Honestly, you probably just do the best you can given the circumstances. Stay safe and stay warm!

We go back on Sunday around noon. Temps in the 40s today and rain; quite a bit of the snow is gone; of course if it freezes that's another story!

Yes, my DH and I were talking about that last night--how in some places they don't have sidewalks, hence no need to clear sidewalks!

Generally, yeah, you do the best you can. If you can't make it, you can't make it. But one of our kids had a fifth-grade teacher who was very nice and all, but she lived in the Poconos--an 80-minute drive from the school! And it's the MOUNTAINS, so if we get a little snow here, you know they get it ten times worse out there. And the teacher was a nervous driver. So the teacher missed a day or two per week during the snowy part of the winter. All the parents were so aggravated.
