  • Shawnee lately

Has anybody been to an RCI Shawnee unit lately? How was it? (Seems that I remember that Fairfield took over, and there was complaints about Fairfield.)

    Thanks,

    Nancy

We stayed at Northslope over xmas and were in Ridgetop Summit (through II) in February.

I d/n really see much difference compared to previous years. I was hoping the 9 am checkout would be modified, but they were as adamant as ever when I tried to get a later checkout, no way no how.

We were just there three weeks ago...

The resort was basically the same but the flooding in June really caused Shawnee a lot of issues.

      Flood Waters Hit Resort Again

      Wednesday, June 28, 11:39 p.m.
      By Jim Coles

The Delaware River has left many areas in Pike and Monroe counties a mess. Some places had entire homes washed away.

For the third time in less than two years Shawnee Inn lost a round to mother nature.

"They were here all night, last night moving stuff around. We know what we do. Not that you want to have that experience to invite the guests to leave in an orderly way. That's the good thing, nobody got hurt," said Shawnee owner Charlie Kirkwood.

There will be no golfing on the course at Shawnee for a few days. The water there is about four to five feet deep in the shallow parts and up to 14 feet.

People come to the Pocono's for nature. You get mother nature.

"Oh, I'm getting lots of nature. I'm from Puerto Rico. I know what hurricanes can do. But, this is crazy," said Anthony Baldwin of Brooklyn, New York.

Confidence on a golf course is important, so is re-building a golf course.

"You never want to go through this. We have good people, we have good people working for us. And customers are happy. And I'm not predicting it. But, I won't be surprised if we're open within the week," Kirkwood added.

At this point a sense of optimism and humor doesn't hurt.
A sizable percentage of the villas down at Fairway and some of the Riverview units were badly damaged. Many of the fairway units were being repaired with all the drywall being ripped out along with all the furniture, carpets, etc.

The golf course down along the river was open but there was considerable river mud all over the place. The edges of the parking lots and driveways had piles of mud and sediment like you might see left after a snow storm (perhaps a foot high).

As for the Fairfield takeover, I did not see many differences but I did get the sales pitch to try to get us to buy another Fairfield unit and convert our Shawnee unit to Fairfield points. That is posted here:

I have a some photos on the camera but since we got home I have been busy and forgot to post them... Most of the resort was pretty much normal Shawnee but the cleanup, almost a month after the flood, was still ongoing!

Here are sme images I found off the web:

I also was at Ridgetop Summit last February. The unit was very, very nice...it was just about a year old I believe. They tried to schedule us for some sort of presentation as we checked in. I forget what they called it but after check-in they said to go over to the Fairfield desk to receive your welcome packet and to schedule a time. They acted like it was no big deal and that it was just part of staying there. When I told her that I would not be attending anything while on vacation she let it go. I'm sure that others had the impression that it was somehow mandatory.

I've gone to Shawnee over February break the last 3-4 years and there was usually good availabilty 6 months to a year out. Not anymore. Now there's nothing. I wonder why.

I'm not too disappointed by the lack of availabilty, though. It seems like things are going down hill there. The recreation center and locker rooms were getting dirtier, the pools were too cold to enjoy and the hot tub was disgusting. As I entered the hot tub I was enveloped in a layer of oily scum then assaulted by a giant fur ball.

I would probably stay for a night or two just for the skiing but it would certainly not be for a nice week long family vacation like it was in the past.

This was the first February break we didn't spend there. We must have been next door to each other two years ago, though! I have also noticed the decline in availability, I think there were developer weeks that have been sold. I have never liked the rec center (usually too crowded) though the kids enjoy it.

That flooding was pretty devastating judging from these photo images. You wonder how they can fix the damage of so much water? How sad too for the people who live there and have their home flooded too.

              Thanks

Thanks for all the replies. Was trying to decide where to go in October and Shawnee had lots of availability. Decided to head South instead of North.

We went there in November a year ago and actually liked it much better on that stay. First, they put us in Ridge Top Summit, nice and new. Second, the shuttle bus came and got us whenever we called, and the driver was very polite and accommodating. Third, the pool at the Inn was open to us (I don't know if this was b/c the indoor pool was under repair or if the Inn pool is always available to guests at the timeshares) and their locker rooms were brand new and very clean, and the pool was small but warmer than the one at the rec center. Fourth, the activities got enough participation that we enjoyed them but they weren't packed. So I think off-season is a pretty good time to visit Shawnee.
