  • Need DC recomendation

My 83 year old father wants to visit the new Marine Corps museum outside of DC. Trying to decide if using a Timeshare week is the way to go. Considered Williamsburg and just drive from there. Mom would like that also. But is there any other recomendations? Thinking March, April time frame.

You should be able to pick up some nice timeshares for that time frame in Williamsburg. IMO that is the way to go. Drive to DC should be about over an hour and a half. Start early and you should have enough time to do it all if not an extra days trip won't hurt. Keep in mind, That There may not be a lot open in VA at that time. You should be able to see most of the colonial things as well be able to do plenty of shopping in the outlets. Another good thing is you will not have to wait at the many restaurants in VA.

I think Fairfield has a timeshare right in the DC area, but it may be a tough one to trade into. Massanutten and the Skyline ranch are other closer possibilities.

I do not know if I would want to visit a museum, walk around ALL day, and get on I95 heading home.

Now, I am not one who loves to drive, so I am just giving MY opinion.

I would stay at a hotel nearby, so I could eat soon after touring the museum, and go to bed.

In looking at the press release for the dedication of the museum, there appear to be many hotels nearby (in all price ranges).

And, if shopping is really a requirement, there is another ourlet/discount mall nearby Triangle, VA.
        hope this info helps,

          Outlet mall

          Deede,

I live nearby and didn't know of an outlet mall in Triangle. Where is it and what is there?

          TIA

Driving to the USMC Museum at Quantico from Williamsburg would be an easier drive than Williamsburg to DC. However, you could still run into heavy traffic between Fredericksburg and Triangle. For shopping there is the Potomac Mills Outlet Mall a little further north.

Thanks for all the suggestions. With my parents in their 80's shopping is totally out. Dad was a marine in WWII and really wants to go before he can't.
Will look at Williamsburg and hotels.
If we stay near the meuseum where would you fly into?
              Thaks again.

                "Discount Mall Nearby Triangle, VA"

                Nancy --

When I said "nearby" I meant Potomac Mills -- which IS nearby.

                Jgirvine --

As far as an airport nearby -- looks as if you might have to do the I95 trek afterall. I would think National is the closest.
                hope this info helps,

Rather than using your father's energy on the car ride (which can be tiring for older people), maybe you should look into hotels in D.C. or near Quantico. I know my MIL (now 83) feels much more comfortable in a hotel than in even the nicest timeshare. (She likes the daily maid service, she likes having her bed made for her, she likes having more privacy from us "kids.")

Here's the tripadvisor info on a Ramada Inn near the museum. Maybe you could stay in Wburg, drive up and go to the museum, then spend one night in the hotel and drive back the next day.

While Reagan National is probably your closest option for airports, Richmond is another possibility. Richmond would be a farther drive, but would take you out of most of the traffic in the DC area. This assumes that you are not interested in sightseeing in DC.

As for hotels, you may want to look for something in Fredericksburg.

Wow, thanks everybody for all the suggestions. Think I will look at flying into Richmand but staying at a hotel in the area.
                      Thanks Tons

If you get Williamsburg exchange, then spend only 1 or 2 night in DC, then try Newport News, Norfork, Richmond.

Have you tried FF Alexandria for that time period? Only 25 (+/-) minutes away. This gives you the opportunity to visit DC also via
the metro. Great place to stay.

FF Alexandria might be a difficult exchange the time of year you are interested in going, what with school breaks and the Cherry Blossom Festival.
