  • Williamsburg in August - I must be insane to even need to ask but...

I assume that Williamsburg in August is going to be normally extremely hot and humid, am I right? How far is Williamsburg to Virginia Beach and is this a reasonable day trip or not really?

I found someone that offered a trade for our Poconos week but I am not sure I want Williamsburg in the Middle of August.

Yes it should be hot, sticky and crowded. Va beach is about an hour or so away depending on traffic- and there will be some heavy traffic times.

We were there in late July a couple of years ago and yes, it was hot. Very hot, and humid. But I didn't find it that bad, somehow. They take their air conditioning very seriously, so you do your sightseeing early in the day and in the evening, you take a dip in the pool in the morning, and then in the heat of the afternoon you go shopping at the outlets, or see a movie, or visit a museum.

Colonial Williamsburg is right next to a big, delightfully well air-conditioned Barnes and Noble that is William and Mary's campus bookstore, and there's a cafe in there. Also there are little shops and cafes in the town square.

And there's always Water Country, although there was one day when we were there that we thought it was way too hot even for Water Country.

it is hot but not as bad as Florida is. Take it there is a lot to do with the kids. If you want to go to VA beach you have to start early to beat the traffic.

It's true. It's not nearly as bad as Florida. I don't know why, though. Is Florida even more humid?

Ah. I'm @ Greensprings Plantation during week 33 (August 17-26 this year) as I am most years (family reunion is that week. the week is perfect for me). Where will you be staying?
Yes indeedy, it's hot. But you should still go especially if you have kids. There are tons of outlet malls and the timing of August vacation/back to school clothes shopping is fantastic. A week can go rather quickly there. Va Beach (go early!) one day. Busch Gardens another. Water Country another. Shopping. There's a cool mystery dinner theatre out on Rte. 60. Colonial Williamsburg. Go Karts Plus is on Rte 60 too. Even Norfolk, which you will have to drive thru to get to Va. Beach.
I am VERY familiar with that area so if you have any more specific questions, please feel free to ask!

Ken not that I'm a great barometer for these things but I liked our week in W'Burg a heck of a lot better than our week in Orlando.

Check AAA for deals to Busch Gardens and Water Country. VA Beach is definately do-able from there as well.

and of course you will probably live at the resort pool.

              Just being nosey which resort?

The unit we are considering is Week 32 at Powhatan Plantation and it is a 4-bedroom unit. I think we are likely to let the offer pass however as we would really prefer something closer to the beach or further north so it is not quite sohot and humid. I have been to Williamsburg a couple times but it has been about 10-years since the last time and all I remeber of that last trip was it was way too humid (more then the actual temp).

The week would have been perfect for the kids and school too but the location is just a little off... Hey, we could always change our minds but I somehow doubt we will

Run the 4 BDRM units past Spence especially if you know the unit number.

The whole damn corrider is hot-n-humid and I have a 90 minute drive to any beach anyway.

We really liked Powhattan, the pools and locations.

Oh ok. It sounds like being at the beach is the primary concern for you. Williamsburg is at least an hour from Virginia Beach (not considering traffic). But I have to agree with Lawren, it's gon be hot along the whole Northeast corridor in August! I know it can be smokin in Atlantic City/Wildwood area of Jersey. Personally, I hate Ocean City (Maryland) but that's just me . Is it 'cooler' in say Martha's Vineyard or up Mass/Rhode Island way?

Yorktown is not oceanfront, but there is beach and a park. Much closer than VB.

What/Which resorts are close to Yorktown?

I did a search and all I see are Williamsburg, OR is what you meant that Yorktown has a beach and is close to Williamsburg? (it has been a while, and it's midnight here and I just got home from work )

Thanks. Look like I will be there, (Thomas the train is playing in Norfork 8/18, 8/19, just get a Kingsgate reservation through FF) So will visit Vigina Beach, and probably this one also.

Williamsburg/Yorktown Hotels, Duke of York Hotel on Beach

Look like it is short drive from Williamsburg (about 10, 15 mim?). So any Williamsburg resort should do.

The King Creeks Plantation is the nearest t/s resort to Yorktown,VA. After that the two (2) Fairfield Resorts on route 60 are close to Yorktown.
