We stayed at the Williamsburg Plantation the last week of July / first week of August in 2006. You will not be disappointed with the resort. Its location is convenient for a trip wich includes Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens and Water Country USA.

The parks will be crowded, it is peak season, but certainly not to the level of the Orlando Theme Parks. If you want to break up the drive down, D.C. is a good choice, or if you are really into amusement parks, consider a stop at Kings Dominion. Having driven on the Delmarva peninsula on a July 4th weekend, I would strongly suggest that you take I95 instead; the prior poster who said it took 11 hours made good time!

It would be my wife and three children (B9,G6,B5) and my parents. I don't know if 7/4 is a good thing with fireworks and special events or if it will just make it ridiculously crowded. I would like to take the family to Williamsburg at some point and this seems like a good opportunity with the 4BR. Plus being a teacher, I would end up taking them in the summer anyway. Just not sure about the holiday week.

Doing a search here, I was able to find some great links that Spence provided. Any comments on the resort, timeframe or must do/avoid?

      Thanks,
      Craig
I stayed in a two bedroom in August of 2006 and we were pretty satisfied with the place. My only complaint is that the staff were a bit on the "cold side", but I didn't let that ruin my stay. They only had 1 pool if I recall correctly but it was adequate. They have wifi service only around the pool area and indoor guest center by the pool. There are also two computers in the area, but the guests usually hog them. Not hard to do since there are only two. There are common barbecues behind some of the units. Bush Gardens and Water Country USA are close by. Bush Gardens is still as good as I remember from my first trip there in the late seventies. I did take a day trip to King's Dominion but it was not what I remember. It was run down and I will never go back there. Williamsburg itself keeps progressing away from the quaint place it once was but it is still nice.

        Was there this weekend.

Yes it will be hot... but thats VA for you!! Pack your bathing suit and water bottles.
Colonial Williamsburg is a close car ride. They have parking and shuttle buses if you don't get a close in parking space. The Resort actually has great prices on passes for Williamsburg.
We were there this weekend. got lucky and had a lovely 75 degree day in MARCH!! So enjoyed walking down the main area of Colonial W. They are animal friendly as is the resort (so they told me-- FYI)

We did not find the resort to be of Gold Crown caliber or 5 star. It was nice- it was clean but nothing special. granted we were in the B side of a lockout-- so maybe the multi bedrooms are much nicer... but our unit had a plain ol bath-tub-- The pools were nothing special and there is NO DINING FACILITY on site... and not even within walking distance.
hmm they did offer free DVD rental???
Regardless-- you won't be spending time in your room you will be out touring and shopping at the million outlet malls!! Going to Busch Gardens or even to the beach!

We own a 4 bedroom at Williamsburg Plantation, and it is as described above, a first and second floor. The rooms are very spacious and well-equiped. They are also decorated very tastefully. We were just there over Christmas, which was also our first time as owners to stay at the resort. It is a nice resort, but in my opinion, there is not a lot to do at the resort itself. There is one small indoor pool, and one outdoor pool. There is free internet service in the main building. We saw a small sand volleyball court while walking around the resort. There is a short hiking trail. They have a small play ground area for younger children. I believe you are allowed to bring pets to this resort, although I did not see any animals while we were there. The resort is located very close to everything. Williamsburg is wonderful! There is a lot to do in Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown, so you most likely will not be spending much time at the resort anyway.

There are no restaurants at the resort, but there are several nearby. And the restaurants in Historic Williamsburg are great--a bit expensive, but a real treat. (And I recommend reservations if you plan to go to one of the restaurants right in Williamsburg.)

If you are a teacher, you can get a discount for both you and your family if you show your ID. So don't forget to take it along!

DO check out the Williamsburg website. I'm sure it will be helpful in your planning.

And, have a great trip! Enjoy!

(PM me if I can help on that.) You can take the kids to the aquarium in Baltimore and some of the attractions in DC, too.

It really is a good suggestion - but I would get as close as you can to Williamsburg the first night - because you don't want to miss any of the festivities - you can have a plan for the day even though you can't check in until later in the day.

Sounds like a nice trip - I went and stayed at the Marriott about 4 years ago this April - it really is a fascinating area.

Well we're definitely going...bringing some extended family too! It will be a nice way to start off the summer.
