What shall we not miss on road trip... VA - MI

NW Virginia, passing through Hancock, MD, then across PA and OHio, north and west on turnpikes to Toledo. Up US-23 and I-75 to Houghton Lake, MI.

We most likely will nose around some at Pittsburgh, looking at bridges and city overlooks. I see Observatory, Inclines, City views.

What else might you suggest that is Good Ole USA along this route?

Come on people!

It is hard to believe nobody did anything of interest along this route. What have you done?

We'd like to SEE, so please input enjoyables within short distances.

We will take a couple days but could take a week. Convince me to do so!

If you took I-70 across through Ohio and then I-75 north, you could stop at the National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson AFB just north of Dayton. Easy drop off of I-70. If you are into airplanes, it should not be missed.

Also along that way is the Columbus (OH) zoo, one of the better ones around and the Campus of Ohio State if you are a football nut to see the "Horseshoe".

Toledo's Museum of Glass is also pretty interesting.

The rest is pretty much corn and soy beans.

Hey, that's more like it!
We’re doing 2 nights at Front Royal, VA and at least 1 at Pittsburgh, so we'll take I-76.
Less miles saves fuel and time at the expense of tolls.

Toledo's Museum of Glass may be worthwhile. Have never stopped at Toledo for anything but paying the toll. This time we may not be running into the night.

Houghton Lake Area


CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) Museum

This museum has many photographs and artifacts depicting the
CCC workers day-to-day life and accomplishments, including a
replica CCC barracks building with exhibits. This group between
1933 and 1942 planted 484 million trees, constructed 7000 miles
of truck trails, 504 bridges and 222 buildings.

Open Memorial Day through Labor Day with daily hours from 10 AM to 4 PM. Located across from North Higgins Lake State Park on North Higgins Lake Drive and can be reached at (989) 348-6178.

Toledo, Ohio has Tony Packo's Restaurant at 1902 Front Street, which is the restaurant mentioned in several episodes of M.A.S.H. by Corporal Klinger. They now have other locations in the Toledo area, but this is the original, and is the only one with the signed buns on the walls. See their web site at www.tonypackos.com

In Michigan you can always make a stop in Hell, www.hell2u.com, a short distance northwest of Ann Arbor near the town of Pinckney.

Frankenmuth, Michigan is a tourist town with a German theme, known for the fried chicken dinners at the Bavarian Inn, www.bavarianinn.com, and at Zehnder's of Frankemuth, www.zehnders.com. Also the home of the world's largest Christmas store, Bronner's Christmas Wonderland, www.bronners.com.

Appreciate that Marti. We will most likely do that one. Higgins Lake N side is maybe 20 miles from SIL's house.

That Phipps Conservatory at Pittsburgh was sure a great stop.
Also did the Incline for the Mt Washington view of Three Rivers. The weather was great for photos.
