  • Williamsburg - Am I crazy!!!

My DH always wanted to go to Williamsburg for the 4th. I've been reluctant because I don't want to deal with the crowds and traffic. However, I foolishly made the suggestion that perhaps we could stay there before we go to Orlando on the 5th. I never thought he'd take me up on it. Well, I gave in and just made reservations at Powhattan for the 3rd to the 5th. So, how crazy is it going to be? Anyone been there during that time or have any suggestions on how to best deal with the crowds and traffic? I was thinking if we head out very early on the 4th to get to the Visitor's Center before it opened, maybe it wouldn't be so bad. We've been there at other times in the summer when we had to park in the overflow lot if we came after lunch. That's quite a hike. I don't want to be worn out before we even get to our main vacation. Please - any tips any of you can offer would be greatly appreciated!

I am often in Williamsburg on the Fourth I don't think it is really much different than any other heart of summer week there.

I'm also there usually over the 4th. While I agree with Spence, I would caution strongly against going to Busch Gardens for the fireworks on the 4th. That crowd is horrible. We go one of the two nights before and see the same fireworks with far less crowded conditions. We usually stay home at Powhatan on the 4th, but this year will be leaving the morning of the 4th for Turtle Cay at Virginia Beach.

Thanks for your assurances. We are only going to be there for two nights. We'll be picking up the autotrain to FL on Sunday. We'll probably spend most of the day on the Fourth in the Colonial Area. I'm hoping to head back to the TS by about 4:00 to spend some relaxing time at the pool before we have to start packing up. BTW - If anyone else will be there over the 4th and would like to meet up or have a drink, PM me. It'd be nice to meet some of you.

Sorry I will miss you. Perhaps another time. We will be back for a full week at Powhatan next summer. Enjoy your vacation time in Spain!

Not that I would ever win an argument with Spence, but last time I was at Busch Gardens Europe there was no Spain!

I understand your just kidding. Enjoy!

Just want to mention that we went to Williamsburg in July and it was the worst humidity I have ever experienced.

I vowed to only go outside of summer.

Thanks, unfortunately, ny DH is a teacher, so summer is the only time we can vacation. A few years ago we were in Williamsburg in late June and there was an awful heat wave. It was so bad most of the tourist sites were giving away free bottles of cold water. I remember the ambulance was at the TS at least twice every day that week taking someone to the hospital for heat illness. We'll take the heat and humidity as a "warm-up" to the heat in FL!

This week in Williamsburg has not been hot and humid. It has rain every day since Sunday afternoon. There were no crowds at Busch Gardens this past weekend. The Fourth of July should be very nice this year in turn of crowd control because tourist traveling is off everywhere in America.

Ryne, Thanks for the input. We will be visiting Busch Gardens Tampa when we go to FL, so we'll probably stick to the Colonial area for the 4th. I've put so much planning into this vacation, I'm already tired! We'll be gone for almost three weeks. We've never taken that long a vacation. Hopefully we won't get tired of each other and will still be on speaking terms by the time we come home!

We went for the 4th a few years ago. It was defnitely hot and humid but probably the same weather longtimer has in PA.

We spent a couple of days down at Virgina Beach but never had mobs of people there. Parking was always easy too. It was nice enough and easy enough to get to that after our first visit that we returned there later in the week.
