By the way, here's a week posted today on Craigslist for $500. I'll be willing to bet you could get them to accept $400.

    Stormy Point Village -- Branson -- Dec. 27- Jan. 3 -- $499 Half Price

Just using it as an example...

HoofBeats--A) the cruise exchange is BS--you can find the exact cruise they offer cheaper almost anywhere online. B) deduct maintenance fees? Don't think so....c) go look at a 25 yr. old TS 'resort'

Speaking of math, the pitch 20 years ago (and they still try to pitch it) is the choice between luxury accomodations at locked-in prepaid prices or a box in a box at ever-escalation hotel and motel prices.

Reality today is that the choice is between ever-escalating costs of owning and using a timeshare v. renting the same accomodations for less, or staying in a hotel or motel for even less.

                  Re: points vs. weeks.
Inflation occurs in point systems too...what X number of points got this year requires 1.5X the following year etc. etc.--this is how they justify calling you in for 'reload' (i.e. buying more points and MORE points..). However, just let them try to redefine a 'week' as 5 days...or 3.

This is not true with all points systems. I am a Bluegreen points owner and the point values of week never change for existing units.

Not only it is not true for Bluegreen, It is not true for Wyndham also. And Worldmark, and HGVC. The newer resort do cost more, but the old resort always remian the same.

For week, if you saw your trading power get disapper, than you can not recover, even if you are willing to give up 2 week for exchaning into 1 week in certain resort. For point, if there is a newer resort, and you have to get it, you can either manage to move point from one year to another and get it, or purchase more.

If you buy for the existing resort, its value always keep the same.

If one day its value get readjust, than what you own will get readjust also.

A friend of mine has WorldMark. We were talking about it last night. She seems fairly happy with it. Maybe the points thing isn't so bad. The people that presented to us at Summerwind and at Westgate made it sound horrible! I assume you still have maintenance fees and you have "home" resort if you will?

You still have MF. WM does not have home resort. Some point systems do some don't have that concept. WM is a club that owns all the TS units. You as a club member can will it but you don't own any unit.

The biggest negative on Worldmark is the initial expense. You'll pay more, whether resale or not. The maint fees tend to be lower though, so it's a balancing act. They are affiliated with Wyndham and they have a lot of resorts in the Western US. Again, shop eBay first, and at least look at what they're going for before you buy from anyone.

Oh I'm not buying yet. Probably not for a year or so at this point. I'm just overwhelmed by the options and what I need to learn. Is there a general info thread anywhere?

We are going to Belgium next year for a friend's wedding. I want to go somewhere in Europe after that. . . so vacation next year is covered.

But looking ahead. . . I need to learn. Lots!
