Considering a trip to Cedar Point this year in Ohio. Looked at on-site resorts and hotels, but WAY over priced. Anybody recommend a decent resort I might be able to trade my way into?

There really isn't much of anything nearby. There's a smallish place up on the lakeshore, it is in II, but I think the odds of seeing something there in season are quite low.
The on-peninsula places are expensive. But, we still spring for them for a night or three. As a budget option, consider the Breakers Express. It is very basic, but the rooms are a good size and it is clean. The exception: late in the season, after the kids go back to college, they tend to have staffing issues, and housekeeping can suffer. Another possibility: they sometimes discount the Castaway Bay indoor water park property, because it is off-peninsula and therefore not as popular in-season.
Most of the other off-property hotels I have sampled are in desperate need of refurbishment, and are places I would not visit a second time. Sandusky is a highly seasonal town; the hotels are full during the park season, and empty when it is closed, almost no matter what condition the hotels are in. So, there is little incentive for renovation and upkeep.

We stayed offsite a year or so ago. I think it was Hampton Inn. Loved the free breakfast buffet - we had 3 teens with us.
It was very clean, very comfortable.
End of day traffic was only slightly annoying. May have been 45 minutes getting back to hotel vs 15-20 to get to the park in the morning.
