I've never said anything like this before . . . if you are the type of person who likes to spend their money with those who appreciate you, if you are a Democrat you will want to find another place to spend it.
Seriously.

Care to elaborate? As a Minnesotan who's been to Branson a few times, should I rent a car when we head down there in May? We just want to relax and enjoy the fishin' and barbecue for a few days...not politics.
Jeanne, are you flying down there? Which airline do you take?
We normally drive. We overnight in Kansas City, then get to Big Cedar the next day. We were there last Aug, planning on a return trip in June 2012.
You have to ignore JLB. Sometimes I think he talks to hear his own voice. And never bring up exchanges with him, he will never stop.
Thanks. We're driving. Made the trip often while our daughter studied in Springfield, so we're familiar with and enjoy the area and its people - and the barbecue. My husband's looking forward to having to choose between trout or bass fishing for a few days.
I haven't bass fished in a long time. Have fun with that. Never have trout fished. Last fishing for me was ice fishing and pulling in northerns on Minnetonka.
Thanks for the BBQ advice. We usually stop in KC for it, usually at Gates or the one closest to the Negro League Baseball Museum, (can't recall the name right now); often, it was closed when we came through on Sundays so we hit Gates instead. Not familiar with a good one in Branson, so if anyone has a suggestion I'd appreciate it. I see there's a Bluegrass and BBQ festival in Silver Dollar City, so we might check that out. I've only been there for the XMas lights.
And yes, living where we do affords us easy access to plenty of lakes, but it's nice to check out the scenery elsewhere too.
Couple things:
OK Joes is best as call ahead/take out. It is in a gas station (I am not kidding) and parking is tough and the lines inside is long. Take out line is MUCH smaller. The food is great.
BBQ in Branson, the only ones I know of are Famous Daves and a smoke house at a gas station near the drive to Big Cedar in Ridgedale area. They are limited on when they smoke, so you may be best going to Famous Daves. I don't do F.D. often because they are local based and I can do that any day I want. They are good, but....generic to me. Probably give them a 7, and OK Joes, I would give them a solid 9. I would like the beans cooked a little more.
What is with gas stations and food?

Ouch!
Do you doubt what I posted . . . or . . . do you think someone who has lived here (Branson) for 13 years doesn't know stuff like that about it?
The Taney County Democratics have a mile of Adopt-A-Highway on the Highroad, and everyone thinks that a lot of work for one guy.
I would like to talk more about exchanges, but lack of exchanges is so much easier.
My Minnysoduh buddy is heading back up there tomorrow to play golf in the snow. Another Minnysoduh guy I golf with is heading back next week, and he's hoping summer will last a whole weekend this year.
For KC BBQ, there are several you can't go wrong with . . . Gates, Bryants, Zardas, and the rest.
Branson also has Rib Crib, a chain like FD, but pretty good. I don't know if Odee's is still around. Branson is not known for fine dining.
Had some yummy fresh sweet corn tonight and tomorrow it will be BBQ ribs and sweet corn.
It'd be hard to do Branson without a car.
Food at gas stations. What's up with that? Everyone knows booze and gas stations go together, cuz what's more Ozark American than a pickup truck and a 12-pack of Keystone?

Thanks for all the suggestions and reminder of Bryant's BBQ. I may have to check out a couple of new places. We also had some good BBQ at a gas station, but east on 50, I think.
And as for the weather, we like our 3 or 4 weekends of summer! That's why we're heading to MO in May instead of July!

Yeah, I understand why Minnysoduns are outta sorts this time a year.
Already 8 months of winter, and three more still ahead.
