  • Any specific Chicago recommendations for the following

Ok, so I read the sticky from Bourne about things to do in Chicago. We will be there from Sept 18 - 23. We will likely get the Go Chicago Card, still debating on the 1 or 2 day option. Most of what we will do will be in the loop, such as the Navy Pier, 360 Chicago and the Skydeck.

We will likely do a lot of the her touristy spots such as Millennium Park, and the Cloud.

    My question is this; where in this area can we find decent and moderately priced;

    1. Deep Dish Pizza
    2. Chicago Hot Dog
    3. Chicken and Waffles

These are all things Karen has said are a "must try" while we are there, but don't know where to begin. We don't want to venture to far, as we will be doing the Big Bus Hop On / Hop Off tour, so ideally something located on or near the stops for that would be great.

I should add, we will also be going to Chicago land Speedway, thinking there is likely a good chance we can get a Chicago Dog there?

If you're going to the race, traffic out that way will be terrible, and the food will be standard stadium type stuff.

You'll get a bunch of different suggestions for deep dish. My favorite is still Gino's East at 162 East Superior.

For dogs (now that Hot Doug's is gone) I'd pick Gene & Judes at 2720 North River Road in River Grove, SuperDawg at 6363 N Milwaukee Ave on the North side, or Wieners Circle at 2622 North Clark Street in Lincoln Park (but not late night). And please, no ketchup unless it's on the fries.

I've never known chicken and waffles to be a Chicago staple...

          Me neither.
For deep dish Pizza, I like Lou Malnati's and there is one in the Loop and a couple in River North/Gold Coast area. My son who lives in Chicago likes Giordano's partly because it's very close to where he lives.
I also like Chicago's Italian Beef Sandwich. I usually take one from Al's on the plane going home. Beats the lousy airplane food.

Lou's is good, but I find their sauce to be slightly too sweet.

I do like Lou Malnati's deep dish as well as Uno's.

For hot dogs, the Chicago people that I know of really like the Portillo's dogs.

Thanks for all the suggestions, I knew you could be counted on.

I think for Dog's we are going to try Portillo's, and Gene & Judes for sure as these were both highly recommended on another website I found dedicated to the Chicago Dog. Yes, no ketchup for me and if they dare trying to put lettuce on it I will put a stop right there!

For Deep Dish pizza, based on research so far, it will probably be between Gino's, Giordano's, and Lou's. Biggest challenge will be seeing if I can get just as slice, and not a whole pizza!

Oh, and as for Chicken and Waffles I didn't think that was a Chicago thing. She must have read about it on some other travel site. I had it once before, just don't remember where. Odd combination if you ask me!

I would say chicken and waffles is pretty much a southeast thing - Georgia, Alabama, etc.

Portillo's is a good dog, but not quite the same as Gene & Judes with the fries rolled right in the wax paper with the dog. If you do go to Portillo's I love the beef and cheddar croissant, and their onion rings are very good. I don't know that you'll be able to get a slice unless they sell them at lunchtime that way. You can always get a small and the leftovers the next day.
