You're kidding, right???
Seriously, Ely is very beautiful in the summer and early fall. The Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) is gorgeous and there are many neighborhod hotel to accomodate you.
However, during the other eight months of the year it feels like the end of the earth. Talk about off season timshare weeks- these would go untouched on ebay.
My mom does consulting for their school district and my husband got his moose (MN only allows one time to hunt moose per lifetime) up there.

I'd suggest booking a trip through Outdoor Adventures Canoe Outfitters. Doug Jordan used to own it, not sure if he's still in the business - he made sure parties had everything they needed (including very detailed routing) and didn't cheap out on the supplies. I worked up there one summer between college semesters. if you aren't going into the BW, why go?
And yes, a zillion boy scouts. I used to have the pleasure of serving chicken a la king to 40 of them per seating, sometimes 3 seatings. ugh.

Ely, MN
Timeshares: closest is #2874 RCI GC - Villas @ Gaint's Ridge, Biwabik, MN - probably 45 - 50 miles from Ely ---- Gaint's Ridge is a 'ski resort' - midwest style - low hills and short ski runs - nothing anywhere close to Colorado type skiing - and a golf resort - with two courses on site ......
#7632 RCI - Lake Homes @ Superior Shore, Two Harbors, MN - probably 60 - 70 miles from Ely, via Hiway #1 -
http://www.ely.org/ - - Ely is diffinitely a canoe area - West end of the BWCAW - Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness -
Grand Ely Lodge is probably the most upscale of the motels - River Point Villa is a nice resort on the east end of Birch Lake - I have been on the ground several times but never stayed there - Timber Bay Lodge and Houseboats has rental house boat facilities on the West end of Birch Lake - with a small boat marina and bait shop......
We have been visiting the Ely area for many years.

They just had a big fire up in the area. The fire started May 5, apparently from an unattended campfire, and burned across almost 76,000 acres, about half in Minnesota. The Minnesota portion of the wildfire is the state's largest and most costly since 1918. About 140 structures in Minnesota and 15 in Canada were lost to the fire. As of May 22, 2007, most of the 1,000 firefighters, dozens of the fire engiines and other equipment have been released from the Minnesota side of the fire. Residents, especially resort owners and outfitters who make their living from tourism, are hoping visitors won't shy away from the area because of the extensive news reports on the fire. They note only a small portion of the Gunflint Trail and BWCAW areas have burned.
