  • Why Do They Do This?

    We live in Wisconsin.

We received a phone call from a timeshare resort in Branson. But it could be at any timeshare Resort.

The made an offer to have us come to Branson to see their resort for a small price. But instead of staying at their Resort, they would put us up in a hotel room in Branson.

What I don't understand is why don't they just put you up in the Resort? If the resort is so outstanding, it will sell itself. And wouldn't they save the expense of putting us up in a hotel room.

I wouldn't even think about going to Branson to stay in a hotel room. I woud just trade into a Resort.

I think the idea is that they want you to see how cramped and unpleasant it is to stay in a motel room. Then you go on the tour and you see how large and luxurious the timeshare is, and you buy. It's just working another psychological angle.

Perhaps by putting you in a small cramped hotel room then showing you a spacious fully equipped timeshare unit for a "few dollars more," you will be an easier sale.

This may work for people unfamiliar with the timeshare concept. For veteran timesharers, it is far less impressive.

        That could Be the Reason.

I also agree that for anyone that is already a timeshare owner, it is fare less impressive. In my case, I would consider going to Branson to stay in an outstanding resort. But, they will never get a shot at me to buy a Branson timeshare week, if all they offer me is a hotel room.

Perhaps, it would be better to ask if we are owners of another timeshare week at the time of the call. Then they could offer us a stay at their Resort.

It could be a pre-construction project.

How about owners occupying the units? If there are units standing empty then I can see them putting you into one of the timeshare units but, if there are owners who want to stay, even as a last minute booking, those units need to be kept open for them without promising them to prospects.

Another thought is that exchangers are better prospects than "cold calls" looking for a super cheap vacation. Exchangers are already owners and my bet is most owners have purchased directly from the developer. While everyone here knows about the secondary resale market, my bet is a majority of timeshare owners don't.

As a for instance, I've booked two exchanges for friends using AC's we weren't going to use. Both are short notice exchanges. If those units had been promised to cold prospects looking for a super cheap vacation they wouldn't have a shot at friends I'm sending who already know that I'm sold on timeshare. Essentially, they want to keep those units open for "better" prospects until the last minute OR put new sales into those units and move them out of the hotel room for the remainder of their visit as an incentive to not rescind their contract.

You never know, once you arrive you might be put into one of the timeshare units instead of the hotel room. They just can't promise that one will be available until after you get there.

BTW, if you've signed up for the tour with Westgate, be ready for one of the worst motel rooms we've ever stayed in. Think Motel 6 quality. Maybe they've improved since we stayed in one several years ago. Way back when it was owned by Grandvista.

I understand the angle they are taking.....putting one in what is usually a dumpy motel room and then showing off the spacious timeshare....just another sales tactic.

It also puts me off as I think it would anyone who has timeshare experience. I will not go on those dumpy promo's.....if they were offering a stay at their resort in a timeshare then I might consider it.

I had a friend that went on a promo at what was the Embassy in Maui and stayed on property. They gave her the least desirable units and she worked them telling them that no way she would buy there if this is the type of units they had. So they showed her the better units and she still said 'you expect me to pay that kind of money for this...can't you do better?' Well they did and gave her a great ocean view unit. She didn't buy but did have a fantastic stay.

Once we were invited to stay at a t/s and did stay in a unit (Polo Towers..way back when it was very new), but couldn't use the kitchen...no utensils...it was one they rented out. We got some calls from FF (when they were just FF) and I asked them 'why don't you put us up in a unit, instead of a motel room? Let the people see how nice it would be to stay in a full unit instead of 'just a motel room.' They told me that I could stay in a unit IF one was available, but we never could work out a date. I wonder if you couldn't try that next time? See what happens.

It seems like the resorts would put these "potential" buyers into their own units. That way these people can see just how nice it is to stay in a resort rather than a cramp and crummy ol' hotel room.

Like Walt said... If the resort is nice, it will sell itself.

                  Just my opinion..
