  • Mount Rushmore

We are looking to take a two day trip while we are in Estes Park to see Mount Rushmore. Any recommendations on places to stay over night? We will be there the middle of September, 2008.

On this trip, we were wondering if it would be worth it to drive over the see Mount Rushmore. Other than a 2 hour visit to the carving, is there anything else to do there?

Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Wall Drug, Sturgis and Devils Tower and maybe other things worth seeing, but that is what on our agenda. It will be busy, 3 days and 2 nights.

I would add the Badlands and maybe Spearfish Canyon. Wall Drug and Sturgis would be drive throughs for me but worth seeing.

Wouldn't the Lead, SD timeshare lend itself better to these sites?

I'm a little geographically challenged when we get to the wild wild west.

we are leaving for there tomorrow, there are also a couple of caves,(Wind Cave and Jewel Cave) the town of Deadwood is supposed to be interesting, there is the Needles Highway and Pigtail bridges.Peter Norbeck Scenic Drive, 1880 train out of Hill City. If you see Devil's Tower, I believe you will go through Spearfish Canyon on the way to Mount Rushmore and also pass through Deadwood. You will go past the Badlands on your way home, taking a scenic byway that is close to 90, then you will also see the the Wall drugstore, and the Corn Palace is supposed to be interesting in Mitchell.

                  Mt Rushmore

Old thread, but I am looking for info from anyone who went to Mt Rushmore in conjunction with a timeshare stay elsewhere. Was it a difficult drive/ worth the drive? Where did you stay the rest of the week? Any recommendations?

We were there a few tears back -- what a trip!! Stayed at Barefoot Condos in Lead. The country is just beautiful. We booked with Discovery Tours to see the Monuments -- would do it again in a heartbeat! They picked us up right there at the Resort, was a whole day narrated trip - including lunch - we saw Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park - with herds of Buffalo, & more. All was included in the price, and I think the best part was that we both got to sit back & relax in the nine passenger van & enjoy our surroundings.

Three days is doable but very busy, two days would be all driving and no sight-seeing time. Round trip from Denver/Estes park with all those stops is easily 800 to 1000 miles.
