I have stayed at the Fox River resort in Sheridan and Orange Lake @ Lake Geneva Would prefer the Lake Geneva if not doing much in Chicago. You will see much more available at Fox River.
The Fox River Resort is OK, Clean and well appointed. The bathroom in the Master Suite is so small you have to step next to the toilet to close the door. There is a Hot-tub for 2 in the Master Suite. The area around the resort is Very Very country, the closest actual town (Glasgow) is about 15 Minutes away. We still managed to have a great time at the resort and the indoor pool is nice also. The Golf course is not very challanging but usually in good shape. If you like cat-fishing Fox River will land some beauties. I would and probably will go back. If you know a local they can give driving directions to be on Lakeshore Blvd in about 50 Minutes. My GPS took me almost 80 Minutes.
Lake Geneva Is very nice Property also located in the middle of nowhere and about 1.5 Hours from Lakeshore Blvd. Nice Waterpark if travelling with kids. closer to Six Flags over Chicago. If you go here and enjoy Salmon a must do is chartering a boat in Winthrop Harbor for some Great Salmon fishing. I have someone I would very highly recommend if interested. The Golf course here is much much better and a much more of a challange. The town of Lake Geneva has more to offer than Sheridan such as dining options and shopping.
All that being said I would rather stay at a hotel off Lakeshore if my trip plans were mostly centered around the Magnificent Mile, Zoos, Mueseums, Shedds Aquarium, Soldier Field and the Convention center.
I would agree with btcctomtb. If you are doing Chicago things, stay on or near Michigan avenue (north or south). The Executive House on Wacker is nice and usually reasonably priced. Trying to drive in to the city to see things will eat up your day.
