  • Get Away from the Manhattan Club

Get-aways within New York City are the feature of this thread. Special venues, openings, unique exhibits, off the beaten path activities and new neighborhoods are the focus. Though litings may be seasonal, remember that the same may be repeated the following year.

    So be a New Yorker!

Let's start with the architecture, serenity and beauty along Riverside Drive. Never walked Columbus Avenue in the 70's and 80's? Yet to visit Zabar's? Sounds like a plan to me.

    STUDIO IN THE PARK:

The 4-mile stretch between 72nd and 153rd streets along the Hudson River will be home to "Studio in the Park",the first ever public art exhibit in Riverside Park.

Curated by Karin Bravin and produced by BravinLee Programs, Studio in the Park will celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Riverside Park Fund.

From the curator: On May 6th, 2006 ten site specific installations wil l be on view in Riverside Park, Manhattan’s largest waterfront green space. Riverside Park stretches over four miles along the Hudson River and is one of the most interesting and beautiful parks in New York City. The Park offers a unique combination of man-made and natural elements and the art works, which will be located from 72nd Street to 153rd Street, will respond to and intensify this relationship. The art will infuse the park with color and unexpected materials giving life to discreet areas of the Park and providing the viewer with visual surprises.

There are 11 site-specific installations that will be on view until September 16. A map of all the art works is at www.bravinlee.com

Among them will be 8,000 bright orange balls floating in the river and a brightly colored sculpture made from hand-crocheted,painted nylon rope. the project includes well known artists like Kenny Scharf, who has created three colorful six-foot wide plastic-copated faces that have been installed on two sides of a fence at 105th so that they smile at oncoming traffic on the Henry Hudson Parkway and at people playing in a recreation area. Also, a hot-pink wire sculpture, takes place from 83rd to 91st street.

        Wow!!!!! What a review!!!

Order tickets immediately as this is another Manhattan Theater Club phenom production along the lines of "Doubt" and "Proof".

        Tickets: http://www.telecharge.com/behindTheCurtain.aspx

NY Times review May 10, 2006:

" In terms of construction,"Shining City" is as close to perfection as contemporary playwriting gets....The same is true of even small physical details, like the malfunctioning downstairs buzzer in Ian's office building, and what turns out to be the most shocking ending on Broadway. And no, I won't say anything more about it except that Mr. McPherson has found an inspired alternative to those inadequate tools of communication called words"

".... quiet, haunting and absolutely glorious new play by Conor McPherson that opened last night at the Biltmore Theater."

Starring Brian F. O'Byrne who opened in the priest's role of the award winning Doubt last season. Cast includes Oliver Platt, Martha Plimpton, and Peter Scanavino

I only stay at Manhattan Club 'cause it's what I can get that's timeshare. I don't hang out in area, don't much like it frankly. If there was a timeshare place on the East Side, I'd stay there.

Thanks for your posting...I love New York and hope to see more such gems from you.

            Worth the price.

To redeem this discount visit www.bodiestickets.com and enter code NYC in the promotions box, call 1-888-9BODIES and mention code NYC, or ask for code NYC at the box office.

This is a very expansive and educational exhibit. These bodies are often posed in anatomically active positions. There are also special displays where you can see separate body systems, i.e. the entire arterial system hung up like a skeleton all by itself. Fascinating. I think it would be scary for children to see a whole person sliced in half or into a couple dozen cross-sections, so use discretion. And if you feinted in cadaver lab way back when, you might not like it either.;-), but there is no odor this time.

There is fun stuff do down at the seaport, too. And I think I saw an offer of a free metrocard with ticket purchase. Also, the TKTS booth down there sells tickets for evening performances starting at 11 am (as well as following day matinees if it's a matinee day), and the line is much shorter than the midtown booth.

I guess the restaurants got tired of tracking the year in the price. This is the beginnng of the end of Restaurant Week. Once the pricing becomes arbitrary, like this, it will start to inflate quickly. Expect $30 for lunch/$45 for dinner next year, then $35 for lunch/$50 for dinner the following year, and so forth.

These prices are the same as the prices from the winter Restaurant week. And some restaurants (Montrachet comes to mind) have carried those prices over through the year.

Out of towners should note that many finer NY restaurants have great lunch deals all year round. Le Cirque used to be great for lunch. Dinner, well that's a different story, though there are some good pre-theatre prix fixes in the theatre district. The better places are running $35 prix fixe dinners, others are less.

Since this is the "get away from the Manhattan Club" thread, why not head to Soho for my favorite Thai fusion restaurant with a surprise bathroom... it's called Peep; on Prince street, not too far (within 2 blocks or so) east of the 8th avenue subway stop. Great food, even better Mojitos...

It would be fun to do this in conjunction with the Bodies exhibit. A great day: line up at TKTS at 11 am, get your theatre tix for the evening. Then do Bodies/water taxi tour in whichever order depending on your ticket times for Bodies.. leave some time for some shopping/street entertainers/bite to eat in between...and maybe check out some of the other waterfront attractions/old ships/etc..
