  • Tornado's hit Queens

I was driving when it hit. Trees down on cars and homes all over the place watch tonights news. They have pictures of Middle Village which is where I live. It took me about hour to go about a mile because the strets were closed or un drivable because if the downed trees, A huge limb missed hitting me on my block by 15 feet.

I saw it on tv! How awful; so glad your family and home are safe. I see that the Long Island Railroad service is suspended out of NYC.

        This was no Joke!

The wind had to be 75 mph minimum. The rain was horizontal, I did not see a funnel cloud but the emergency vehicles are running around like mad. The sirens just don't seem to be stoping. Cars are crushed in several areas due to downed trees. Tree limbs are all over the streets and yards. LIRR is shut down!

Some poor soul was killed on the Whitestone expressway. Trucks were blown over.

Check out the pics in NY1 news

omg my mother and two sisters were flying into New York today. I am worried for them . my sister will be 60 later in the month, her daughter decided to have a surprise party for her, the rest of my family flew in today (they forgot to mention it to me til too late), but the kicker is my sister was to return from three weeks in Itlay today too. so she is getting a big surprise with company and a tornado!

What time were they due to arrive.

I have not heard of any aircraft mishaps. If they came in before 5:45pm and after 6:30 pm they should be fine. Maybe delays in arrival?

This was a quick moving system. It was over in about 15 minutes or less. But a real Lion of a system.

Frank, so glad to hear that you are OK.

DH mentioned the tornados as they were all over the news (channel 7 even canceled Jeopardy to show the violent storm) and when he said WHERE my first thought was of you since I know that is where you live.
I know this system was short lived, and am glad nothing affected you or your home and family. Close though..

My Sis in Glendale says the tornado roared straight up Woodhaven Blvd! Just 2 blocks from her house. They escaped any damage or power outages.

So glad to hear you are OK. Who'd ever think of tornadoes touching down in the middle of the city? Hope the clean-up doesn't take too long.
PS - excuse my geographic ignorance - where is Queens in relation to the Manhattan/Central Park area?

Glad you are okay. I heard something on the news about it being a records, not sure if it was because there are so few tornadoes there or what it was. I had heard one person died from a tree hitting the car, and several others were injured by the storm.

Minnesota was hit very hard this year with tornadoes.

Just over the 59th St bridge, about 10 avenue blocks.

The section of Queens we are specifically talking about is around 7 miles from Central Park as the crow flies.

We lost power about an hour after I posted this. Came back on about 7 am. Since we lost power I had nothing to do at 10 pm so I went for a walk and saw just how bad it was, I have never seen it so bad, major large streets like 69th st and Metropolitan Ave closed as was Penelope and Juniper Ave with huge trees demolishing cars. One of my best friends Daughter's car was one of then, BTW some of you met them at the wine event it was the girl and father with the bald head that served you Martinis. I had a huge tree limb just miss my car by 15 feet.

Today you hear all the chain saws with clean up underway
