New York Snowed Under
You may find the most snow-weary folks in the nation's largest city.
First, let's start with the incredible snow-season so far in 2010-2011. The all-time record snowiest season at New York's Central Park (dating back to 1869) was 75.6" in the 1995-1996 season.
•2010-2011 season snow-to-date: 56.1"
•Average snow for the entire season: 22.2"
•1995-1996 season snow-to-date (through Jan. 27): 39.6"
•It took until Feb. 16, 1996 for NYC to exceed the current season's snow total!
How about a football analogy.
Let's say your favorite team (Go Pack Go! Sorry...couldn't resist) averages 22.2 points per game. Then, they go out and hang 56 points on an unlucky opponent, before halftime!
Since roughly 57% of New York's average season snow falls after Jan. 27, you can say we're not even at halftime of the 2010-2011 snow season.
And there's no guarantee Mother Nature will "call off the dogs" in the season's second half and bring in the third string!
For further perspective, let's look at the combined tallies of this season and last season.
•Total snow since start of 2009-2010 season: 107.5" (that's just under 9 FEET!)
•Average number of 10"+ snow days: One every 3-5 years
•Number of 10"+ snow days the past 2 seasons: 4
•Poised to top record snowiest month (36.9") just set in February 2010.
Still not impressed? Let's run down the list of New York City's Top 10 heaviest snowstorms:
