  • My radio station died!

I go away....I'm driving home and I know exactly when I should pick up my contemporary rock station ( which plays enough 80s and punk to keep me happy enough) and I get this ditzy chick DJ playing things I would never choose to listen to. Who IS THIS PERSON?

Get home and hit the internet and WXRP-NY 101.9FM has been sold. So NYC is left without a country western station and now no new rock station.

The good news is the format is still available via internet. The bad news is I am inundated with C-rap and light FM when I'm in my car. Arrgh.

I hate when stuff like that happens! It's like when they discontinue your favorite product.

Do you have a smartphone? You can probably stream it....or anything else for that matter... in your car.

(Of course-I'd have to ask my kid how to do it )

I would hate that. How about 104.3? Our alarm goes off at 6:23 every morning so we can hear the news and then Strange News with Jim Kerr every morning at 6:53.

This has been happening to me over and over here in Miami too.

Now we've got like 90% Spanish language radio and maybe 10% rap/R&b.

I've now resorted to using my iPod exclusively as I'm done with FM radio and I'm not paying for satellite radio for a 4 minute commute.

Kind of reminds me of back in 2005? When WCBS 101.1 FM overnight became this JACK station. 101.1 JACK. What the hell were they thinking!

Well that lasted about 3 months when the management morons realized they made a fatal error.

WCBS 101.1 came back in it's original format.

Bill, I am hoping something similar happens here. A return to format. Lost WLIR years back. This one was a station that played enough older stuff and enough newer rock that my son and I could enjoy it while driving around.

Who else plays the Ramones with current bands?

I have an HD radio in my SUV. Many stations have an additional station or two that they operate on digital signal. This is free radio unlike satellite. The downside is there may be limited range and can be blocked by some tall buildings or parking structures. It works great for me in Minneapolis, but when I am driving out of town, I loose the station and need to search for new one.

For those long drives, I connect my cell phone to my radio and receive some radio stations or Pandora on my cell and listen through my radio speakers.

I know the feeling all too well. We had a great classic rock channel in Rochester run independently for about 3 years with a chief programmer chick that really knew the history of rock and assured a wide range of artists and that no song bot played even twice in a day. The variety was fantastic and it turned me on to Seal, The Smithereens and rare stuff like Sleeping Satellite - it was great! Then one morning I hear disco?? Turns out it was sold to some corporate place that hasn't managed to make a penny or break out of next to last place in ratings over a decade. It was sad.

So I find another independent in Buffalo that comes close - they recently went to HDRadio only - another one gone. So I try talk radio for while and one day my Hannity/ fox stuff is suddenly the short lived left wing disaster - again didn't last & had no audience but they didn't bring back the old format So it was history too.

Thankfully I had XM and got it again for a free year with my new HHR so I can ignore the ad filled nonsense on local channels. They all deserve to go bust IMO. I miss the great days of true independent and progressive radio of old.

I haven't listened to an AM/FM station for several years. I have XM where you always have your station regardless of where you might be. You can select whatever type of music/program you want and there are no commercials.

I had XM free with my last 2 leased cars (GM). When the trial period was up, they quoted me a rate that I did not like, and they always renegotiated. The last rate I got was $5/month for 4 months. The next time they call, I will tell them I want that same rate and I am sure I will get it. I listen to mostly the classic rock stations, the 70's, the 80's, and soft rock/folk called The Bridge.

Many car companies offer a trial period now when you buy a new car. We had an AM/FM/XM radio as standard equipment and a free trial period when we bought our new Honda Ridgeline. Every year when it is time for renewal, I call them up and tell them their rate is too high. Without any hesitation they reduce it by at least 50%.
