You'll be in Battery Park, lower Manhattan. Lots to see in the area, you can walk around the Wall Street area, see the 9-11 Memorial (pre- requested free tickets required), Trinity Church, much more. Take a walking tour with Big Onion of the area, lots of restaurants, or take the subway to anywhere else in Manhattan that you want to see.

I haven't been down there in years, but it's near Wall Street and pretty close to South Street Seaport. The Police Museum is down there. And there's a finance museum that I've heard of, but I don't know anyone who's been there...also Fraunces Tavern has a little museum of Revolutionary War history. I'm afraid I'm very vague on that part of Manhattan--I've only been there a couple of times.
The 1 train goes down to South Ferry, and that's what you would take uptown.

When will you be down there? In addition to the stuff to do in the area, there is a nice hop-on-hop-off "water taxi" that picks up at the 9-11 memorial pier and would take you over to South Street Seaport, then across to Bklyn (I dn recommend if cold out, just get off at the Seaport). You can walk around the Seaport (maybe see the Bodies Exhibit if you're interested -tix in advance),
then you can ride it back around to W 42nd st. On the way back from the Seaport it makes a great photo op stop pretty close to the Statue of Liberty. If you get off at 42nd you are just a few blocks from the Intrepid.
If you'll be around this weekend, Jimbosee and his DW are in from Oz. I was supposed to see them tomorrow but need to get back home so will miss them. I think you met them a few years ago?
Will you be staying in NYC for any length of time?

We plan to stay on Staten Is a couple days rather then in NYC.
Sure would be nice to meet somebody that knows their way around.

We did the "Hop On/Hop Off" tour(s) which I highly recommend. There are 4 tours ( Uptown, Downtown, Brooklyn, and Night ). There is stop right at Seaport. You can switch from one tour to another. Just ask the driver where to switch. It is all very easy and well worth it. I would buy all the tours together as it only cost $10 more than buying a single tour.
The "Uptown" and "Downtown" tours are the best if you don't want to do them all.

I agree, taxi may be good.
Must the bus tickets be purchased ahead? Not sure when we will get to Staten Is. Another 2-days or so. Then weather can be a problem. Also, breathing gear to lug. Getting old and health can be challenging.Robert

I'm of no use w/ the ferry situation--it's been years since I've been there.
But generally ALL subways stations in New York are going to be challenging for anyone with walking problems or problems on steps. Some stations have escalators or elevators, but the stations are still not easy to maneuver--somehow there are always a few steps or a long walk through an underground corridor to get to the train. Then the trains are often crowded....
You could take the city buses more easily. I know the M20 goes to South Ferry. NYC buses "kneel" for passengers so that the bottom step lowers down to sidewalk level. I love looking out the bus window and seeing the city roll by--the buses are more pleasant than the subways. Buses can get crowded, too, but there are seats reserved for those with mobility problems, and most driver will help you.
Maybe you can get some info on HopStop: HopStop.com - Transit Directions: Subway, Train, Bus, ferry, Bike & Taxi.
