  • What's New And Exciting in NYC?

We're going to NYC for Thanksgiving this year -- arriving on the 20th and leaving on the 25th. We go on average once a year, but I thought I'd ask here in case there's something new we might otherwise miss.

So, what's new and exciting in New York City this year?

We were there last month? We liked The Mountaintop, a limited run play about Martin Luther King with a couple of heavy hitter stars, Samuel Jackson and Angela Bassett.

The newest section of the Highline is open. Would be a great walk on a nice autumn/winter day.

See the 911 Memorial, you needed to preorder timed (free) tickets. Very moving.

Don, I do not think I knew you were here or I would have met up with you.

Hoc only 5 days this year 3 full and 2 for traveling. I have a feeling we are not going to meet up this year.

Bummer! I was looking forward to a gluttonous Italian food tour of Queens!

We just booked Bar Americain for Thanksgiving night. Have heard good things about Bobby Flay's food, and the Thanksgiving menu looks good.

You know, I've never done the Highline. Might try that this time. Also, I've heard mixed reviews about The Mountaintop, but have been considering it. My cousin brought a rejuvenated version of Anything Goes to town, and I was thinking about seeing that, as well. I like Cole Porter music.

If you have a day open before thanksgiving I can meet you in Williamsburg Brooklyn for lunch and some real good Italian food.

BTW what is new here since the last time you were here is Eataly. Go there Hungry and be ready to stay 4 hours if not more in the market. Eataly New York | We Sell What We Cook & We Cook What We Sell

We saw Anything Goes androofed It. Sutton Foster is great! We bought rush tickets for a weekday matinee and sat in private box seats for $30 a ticket! The Mountaintop is definitely interesting. Don't let anyone tell you too much about it and ruin the story before you see it (if you do). Angela Bassett was really good, a bit harder for Samuel Jackson, very good but of course everyone has a notion of what MLK should be like . I always think it is hard to play the role of a "real person" when everyone has seen that person for years on TV news and documentaries.

Also agree, recommend Eataly. We ate one night at the bar of the veggie small plates restaurant. Great wine, very interesting food, fun to watch the chefs who make everything in the open area.

Definitely Eataly. New, cool, and great.

The best play (not a musical) around, imo, is War Horse at the Vivian Beaumont theatre at Lincoln Center.

Right now, I'm thinking either Tuesday or Wednesday is good. We're doing a Museum run on Sunday with friends, then a walking tour on Monday. We were tentatively thinking about walking the High Line on Tuesday, with lunch at Chelsea Marketplace, and we have tickets for the 9 11 Memorial at 3 pm on Wednesday. So, lunch in Brooklyn around 11 am on Wednesday is probably the best.

11 am for lunch is more like breakfast. I do not think the place is even open that early. Since you have plans for Wednesday can you do the High line that day with Chelsea market and we can meet in Brookln on Tuesday say around 12:30 to 1 pm? IMO I think you should do Eataly rather than meet up this year. I can try to get over there if I can.

I don't want to make it inconvenient for you. I'd love to see you, but I'm fine meeting up next trip. I'll try Eataly this one, and let you know next time I'm coming to town.

Which walking tour company do you use/recommend?

And since I haven't been here for a while (and we missed NYC last year entirely), what did you end up doing Steve that was new and different for you (if you can remember back that far now!)?

We saw the Macy's parade, went to the 9/11 memorial, walked the High Line, did a walking tour through Manhattan Walking Tours, ate at Bar Americain for Thanksgiving. And also did all of the things we normally like.

Was not too impressed with Bar American, but I enjoyed the High Line, and the 9/11 memorial, though unfinished, was pretty. Macy's parade was nothing after Mardi Gras. Manhattan Walking Tours was interesting, but did not blow me away.
