My daughter is planning on going to NYC next month to look for a place to live. I'd like to get her a TS on a trade if possible on such short notice. The hard part is that everyone in the travel party are too young to rent a car. So, I really need ideas of what is close enough to NYC to take public transportation into the city.

Timeshares near NYC?

The main TS in Manhattan is the Manhattan Club and Hilton. If you can not get that then. IMO you have 2 options, 1 Priceline or 2 get a hotel in Queens or Brooklyn and train it into the City. Also does she have to live in Manhattan or can she live in queens? You will get more for your money and still pay way less if she stayed in Queens.Timeshareforums Shirts and Mugs on sale now! http://www.cafepress.com/ts4ms

There are also timeshares at a couple of Affinia locations - I believe the Affinia Manhattan is currently under contract with Royal Holiday Club. Even if an exchange is not available, you might get a decent rental there.
Another good suite hotel with timeshare-like units is the Beekman Tower Hotel. Rates are generally very good and units are spacious, many with full kitchens. It's near the UN and not quite as central as the others, but it's a good value. When all else fails, use Priceline. If she's not coming between now and the holidays, it shouldn't be too bad.
Do your homework on apartment rentals before you get here, keeping in mind that ads can be deceiving. There are much better values in the other boroughs - many young people are opting for certain Brooklyn neighborhoods for closer proximity to downtown Manhattan by subway (in addition to self contained "hip" in the 'hood). Also worth checking in Queens (still she'd want to be near a subway or Long Island Railroad station).
A car is not a plus in the city - anywhere she'd want to live should have good subway access.

Okay, I will have her check out Queens and Brooklyn. She already knows there is no way she can afford to rent in Manhattan.
I totally forgot about Priceline. What would be a good price/number of stars to enter to get a decent place without breaking the bank?
Also, are there any TS semi-close, like in Penn or NJ?
Thanks for all the info.

I just got a one bedroom Manhattan club for them from SFX for a week at the end of January. Hopefully, they won't get too spoiled by that.

With SFX, we have never had to pay any extra resort fees at any of the 3 resorts.
All 3 timeshares are within 3 blocks of each other but the Hilton on 6th is the best location.John

They told me that they couldn't rent a car because of their age, but now they are saying that they could, but it would cost a lot extra because of their ages. Since he will be 21 by the time they get there, hopefully that will work out for them. They want to rent a car to use to check out the other areas.

Since the room at Manhattan club sleeps 4, I might end up going for a few days. Of course, I don't want to look at apartments.

They definitely don't want to rent a car. Public transportation is very good.John

I booked a room for two weeks at the YMCA (Vanderbilt) a couple of months ahead of my move to NYC in the early 80's. I went to the unemployment office who referred me to an employer, and then I went to an apartment service that referred me to something in my price range. It all went pretty smoothly and while the room at the YMCA was small, it fit my purposes (and wallet) just fine.
I would also suggest that they don't look for an apartment that is not convenient to a subway station. In the middle of winter, the last thing you want to do is stand out on the street and wait for a bus. There are many places with cheaper rent (I believe the Greenpoint area of Brooklyn is one) that are still very accesible to the city.No one can be exactly like me. Even I have trouble doing it. - T. You can't go wrong with the Manhattan Club location. January is an easier time to trade in than others, and for future reference, also a great time for Priceline rates. January's lower crowds make it better for restaurants, theatre, etc... so you should definitely go!
I agree with others that a car is unnecessary - it would be an expensive hassle. Also agree that subway access is key for apt locations.
