  • Need cheap eats NYC

I'd like to start a thread to refer back to when it's time to go.

DS will be traveling to NYC (without me ) first week of April for the National Model United Nations conference/competition at the Marriott Marquis. They will stay at the Marriott. Flight and hotel should be covered by grants and fundraising but I'm pretty sure food is on their own.

Where can POOR college students eat in and around the Marriott. Even street vendor reco's would be fine.

They will probably get one or two days for sightseeing..depending.. so even other places out of that area would be fine...but it's still going to be on a tight budget.

    Thanks!

If they walk over to Ninth Avenue, there are lots of reasonably priced restaurants over there.

Here's a website about some of the food trucks in Manhattan. Some trucks have regular schedules of where they park, and some trucks move around and post Twitter updates about their locations.

      That's very exciting!!

There is an annual New York magazine issue called "Cheap Eats." Here's a link to the 2011 online version, but I'll bet the 2010 and 2009 versions will have good recos too.

I agree with Wacky -- definitely better bet to head over to 9th avenue. I'm not too familiar with what's over there but there should be quite a few good options.

Pizza, Burgers and hot dogs are still cheap eats but in NY it is much higher. Plus the area that they are staying at is mostly Theater and sit down restaurants. Look for places that Restaurant.com has, If they want a nice not over priced, Mexican is not to bad I like this one place called Havana Central and they might still be in Restaurant.com

          Stressy,

I agree with heading toward 9th ave. Maybe even 10th, "Hell's Kitchen.". The food will be much cheaper in that area.

Pam Real Thai on 49th near 9th ave has main courses under $10.....I've never been, but my DD used to eat there every once in a while. Also, John's Pizza might be a good choice.

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

I like Yum Yum Thai, the one that's closest to 42nd on Ninth. (There are two or three of them, but the best one is the one that's just north of 42nd.) Also there's a Chipotle on 43rd and Ninth, if they like that. There's a rotisserie chicken place called Peter's? I think? Also near 42nd, on the west side of Ninth. I haven't been there, but it always looks good.

The following is an awesome choice for reasonable and good food. It is from the Halal street cart on the corner of 53rd and 6th Ave. We ate there several times.

There is an Egyptian dish of rice with beef or chicken, and sour cream that is awesome. The vendor across the street from the Hilton on the corner of 6th and 53rd had a line 0f 20-40 people all day long until the wee hours of the morning and they were fast. The Egyptian dish is very large with more than enough for 2 people and costs just $6.00.

I think you should go along to be sure their nutritional needs are being met.

Another vote for the Halal cart on 53rd and 6th - it is quite tasty, and the line is always long, all day, every day I've walked by.

I was going to recommend John's Pizza as well. We go there every time when we visit NYC.
If your son is adventurous, he might also try Joe's Shanghai at 24 W 56 Street (between 5 and 6 Ave). They serve very authentic Chinese (Shanghainese) food at affordable price.
Better yet, he should go to China Town at least once. Dim Sum for lunch is pretty cheap...
