HARDING, N.J. (AP) — Five people died when a small plane headed for Georgia crashed on one of the New York City area's busiest highways.

Authorities say they were three adults and two children. It wasn't clear whether they were a family.

Witnesses told the FAA the single-engine appeared to break up as it spiraled into the wooden median strip and exploded on Interstate 287 in Harding, N.J.

FAA spokesman Jim Peters says the plane had taken off from Teterboro Airport and was headed for DeKalb Peachtree Airport near Atlanta.

Peters says there was a garbled transmission from the plane before it dropped off the radar

A small plane successfully landed on a fairly busy highway near us a few years back; every time I drive through there I wonder how, because not only is it busy but there are tons of wires and things the pilot had to slip through. I know someone almost pulled out in front of him, too -- guy said he didn't know why, but he looked up a bit and realized there was a plane landing on the street.

But it sounds like this plane was breaking up in the air. They've identified those onboard:

Family of four, their dog, and husband's business partner. Sounds like there was some icing on reaching altitude. I need to stop watching the news

Several years ago I was on the Sawgrass Expressway in SE FL, going to the mall. There was a small engine plane parked in the median as I went by. I thought: Holy Cow!

In South Korea MANY of the 'interstates' are designed with integrated runways, luckily I never saw them used as they were not designed for the casual private plane!
