  • RI Christmas

We are trying to make vacation plans for 2012. Newport, RI Christmas week is one option we are looking at. What is your opinion on this location/time for a homeschooling family of 4 (3-13)? What kind of area attractions/activities would be available?

Newport at Christmas can be beautiful, or you could get snowed in. This year on Christmas Day we had temps in the upper 40s. I have also seen 24 inches of snow with wind chill in the single digits or below.

Here is a link to one of the Newport Christmas Event sites The 41st Annual Christmas in Newport, Rhode Island Celebration

Depending on how well your and your family handle cold it could be a lovely week. If the weather is really bad, it could be the worse week of vacation you have ever had.

Today the temps are near 50 as a high and expecting upper 30s tonight. This is very unusual.

We're from south Texas so we don't handle cold well.

Then you should keep looking. You could definatley be making snowmen anywhere in New England at the end of December.

If you have the flexibility to avoid school vacation times then September in New England is the best time weather wise to visit, outside of July and August when the summer crowds can be unbearable.

Because of tax season I'm limited to after September 15th, I find I look forward to those late September weeks more than any other.

Actually, we homeschool so we rarely travel during public school vacation times. We just new we wanted to go to new England sometime in the next couple of years and I saw the RI exchange available.

You probably know that Colonial Williamsburg has special weeks for homeschoolers, with all kinds of educational events for the kids. (Not in New England, of course, but just wanted to throw it in there.)
