That's a real stupid move by the Governor, IMHO. He must be doing it for "shock value." I understand the idea that the state casino regulators/inspectors are state employees. I also understand that the casinos contribute hundreds of millions of dollars to the state coffers. The casinos can't offer to pay the inspectors directly, but why not allow them to put the money into a trust fund to pay the inspectors? Sounds like a win-win proposition to me...

Gov Corzine
Unfortunately Gov Corzine was voted in last year by the Democrats so we are stuck with this guy for awhile and possibly an increase in our sales tax from 6% to 7%. Last I heard all the representatives have gone home for the day so the reality of the casino's closing at 8:00 am tomorrow morning is becoming a reality.
On local news earlier today people were checking out of the casinos going elsewhere in anticipation of this becoming a reality. This really sucks for people who have planned vacations.
Our Motor Vehicle office has been closed already and left people with expired licenses and registrations with a problem until this is settled.

I did not think that the casinos would have closed. That's the last term for this Governor.Timeshareforums Shirts and Mugs on sale now! http://www.cafepress.com/ts4ms

Only essential workers were to report to work and they did not consider the casino inspectors essential.
It doesn't make sense...according to MSNBC the state gets a cut of the money from the casinos, roughly $1.3 million/day...Does it makes sense not to pay the ~130k for the state inspectors for a few days work and lose $1.3 mil a day in revenue?
what does that do to their budget?

The problem is much more complex...
The senators and assemblymen are responsible to put a budget on the Governor's desk in time for him to either sign or veto by July 1.... they didn't and still haven't..
The Gov is stuck until he has something to even look at..
The constitution of our state says that not one penny can be spent without a budget.... not one cent... Technically, the gov could have told everyone to stay home.. he used his powers to declare a state of emergency (usually applies to natural disasters) which allowed him to demand essential (only to protect life and limb) employees to stay on the job... without any ability to pay them.... Only state police, and prisoner/patient care..
Essential personnel that protect "income", are not considered essential in a state of emergency.
The gov's hands are tied, he is stretching the law as far as he can..
It is up to the legislators to either pass the gov's budget or come up with their own but get something on his desk... NOW!
Question: "Where are the state senators and representatives??"
Answer: At the center of this entire fiasco..
The stalemate seems to be over a raise of the state sales tax going from 6% up to 7%... about $260 a year for the average family... 41,000 State workers have already lost more than that, by tomorrow another 40-60,000 employees of the casinos will lose more than that. Small businesses that are supported by the state and casino workers are reporting losses that jeopardize their very existence.
The governor has put a cot in his office and refuses to leave until he gets a budget on his desk..
Right now this situation is very ugly and getting worse..
Pete
