Trying to decide whether or not to bother.. sounds like it's about two hours further. Anything 'worth the trip' for the boys (age 12) there? If we're going to go, I need to decide by tomorrow to allow time to have our passport/birth certificates fedexed up here...

My older son will be on a camp trip to Quebec, he would just DIE if I showed up! But he is safe, that is surely too far for a daytrip.

Montreal - places to visit
I would recommend the sites near the Olympic stadium. The Montreal Botanical Garden is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. Last year my 13 yo son really enjoyed just sitting and enjoying being outdoors in the oriental gardens and sitting on a rock in a lake in the native American garden area. The Montreal insectarium is also on the grounds of the Botanical Garden.
Nearby is a tower that one can ride up for a view of the city and Olympic stadium. The Montreal Biodome (formerly the cycling stadium) has examples of four ecosystems under one roof.

Avery,
There is so much things to do in the area that if you just go for one day... La Ronde is the big amusement park of the area, as someone wrote lots of things to do around the Olympic Stadium, in Laval there is the Cosmodome (space camp and so on..). On july 15th at La Ronde at the end of the day there is a huge fireworks (competition between countries during all summer, i will be there with my kids!). Anyhow... you might wanna spend more than just half a day...

La Ronde won't work, I have an AmusementParkPhobe with me... but the fireworks sound like fun and that is the day we would probably go... maybe I will have our documents sent up just in case... though I am thinking it may be better to save it for a trip when we can spend more time and combine it with Quebec...

Montreal and Quebec city by car is about 3 hours drive and i know lots of nice place to go in Quebec city area so yes i would spend a couple of days in the area if i were you. Is your boy like Water Park? If so, well the Biggest Water Park in Canada is right at 20 minutes from Quebec city! You can PM me about things to do in the province of Quebec as i do live here and know my place!
About the firework saturday, the Jacques Cartier bridge will be closed as everytime there is a fireworks competiton and there is a HUGE crowd (around 100 000 or so) that watch them so arrives early or park around Longueuil city (next to La Ronde) and walk as close as you can from the amusement park. Being on the bridge is a nice spot but you've got to arrive early!

Insurance when traveling to Canada
When you do decide to visit Canada, be sure to check with your auto and health insurance companies. I think you need to take proof of auto insurance with you and there is a special form for that purpose. Also, not all US health insurance covers injuries or illnesses that occur when the patient is not in the US. You might have to purchase travel insurance that includes medical just for the time you are in Canada.

Well, we made it as far as Lake Champlain. It was gorgeous and that was a good enough day trip for me. We will plan a week in Quebec and Montreal one summer so we can really enjoy it. My older son spent three days in Quebec City on a camp trip the same week we were in Vermont; he absolutely loved it there and can't wait to return.
