It should be rather moderate at that time of year.

i did not realize it would be leaf season, or perhaps past leaf season at the time. What kind of weather expectations can I have, will it be cold already?
I agree with tony that the weather will be moderate BUT Cape Cod is much like south shore Long Island. We are warmed by the Gulf Stream so our weather (near the water) is warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Early October will still be nice weaner, 60's and maybe 70's.

The season starts in mid-to-late September, and peak color often coincides with Columbus Day weekend. Be sure to make hotel reservations well in advance, as this is one of the most popular times to visit New England

It is a lot of driving but you are also not in a hurry nor do you need to travel during rush hour.
You will be leaving the cape before the start of the holiday weekend so will avoid that traffic.
Because it is leaf peeping time the driving will be beautiful.

Sounds like the makings of a great trip!

              This is a wonderful trip.
I did it two years ago and went all the way from New Hampshire & Maine to the Cape.
If for some reason you can't get a room with an exchange, I ended up renting from VRI resorts which has alot of resort options in New England
quite reasonably. I think the cape was only like $100 a night, the white mountains a bit more like $200 but we had a nice 2 bedroom unit at
Pollard Brook. I know they have smaller units in the other Inn Seasons resorts cheaper since you are only 2 people.

You will love it. I could go back every year.
              Enjoy your planning.

I just confirmed the week at smuggler's beach. i am waiting on the berkshires, i have 14 tpus and it is 16, hoping they have a sale. also checked the unit upgrade button available to priority members, but don't have much hope on that. unit is 400 square feet!

While at the Cape, have dinner at Clancy's or Chapin's (both in south Dennis). Best fish and chips you will ever have.
