  • Kaatskill Mountain Club (#7608) Hunter, NY - has anyone stayed - Leaf Peeping/Fall

    April-Oct 2015. Kaatskill Mountain Club (#7608) Hunter, NY 12442

I have a unit on hold for Fall 2015

Doing a little reading, they say leaf peeping is 6 weeks from mid Sept thru late October starting in the Catskills

"While the leaves do not wait to change colors even for busy New Yorkers, one of the advantages of this region is that the peak leaf-peeping season lasts for about six weeks, from the middle of September through the end of October. First signs of fall are in the higher elevation around the Catskill Mountains, a bit later in the Shawungunks, and still later in the Hudson Valley. "

Have not been to the Hunter Mountain area in many many years and thought it would be a nice base of operation.

"The region is packed with art galleries, including those found in Hunter and the nearby village of Woodstock. Groups can enjoy a variety of music and cultural festivals hosted in the area. Architectural landmarks including covered bridges and historic homes such as Cedar Grove, the home of Hudson River Art School founder Thomas Cole, and Olana, the home of Frederic Church.

    Shopping and Antiquing
The area features nearly 50 antique shops and galleries, all within a short drive of the Kaatskill Mountain Club. There are also dozens of local artisans and craftspeople.

Baseball Hall of Fame and Museums
Area museums cover a wide range of interests! Cooperstown, NY and the National Baseball Hall of Fame are 90 minutes from Hunter Mountain. Art museums include the Fennimore Art Museum, with its Native American and American exhibits. Transportation buffs will enjoy several options, including the Empire State Railway Museum and the Hudson River Maritime Museum. And that’s just a small sampling!"

    And lots of festivals.....http://www.hudson-valley-traveler.com/events.html

I've stayed twice both times in late April. One time it was a studio and the second time a two bedroom. Its a fractional and owners own several weeks. The two bedroom was as large as the typical 2 br Marriott. The sound proofing was not good and you could hear neighbors, those in the hall and those above you. Quiet time starts either at 10pm or 11pm so they won't do even comment to extra noisy guests until quiet time starts. The pool is heated but is fairly small for the size of the resort. Even so it probably is only a problem in the summer because even with heat it was a little to chilly when I was there in the spring and the fall and winter would be the same. There are 2 gas grills by the pool, again most likely a problem in the summer less so other times of the year.

This summer through RCI they just added a $5 a day resort fee. Just extra revenue for the resort. They have a bar restaurant on site that isn't bad and is reasonably priced. On the weekends they have a buffet breakfast that is pretty good at around $10 per person including coffee and juice. The front desk people have always been pleasant.

They don't get the names from RCI reservations until the week of so if they have any other 3 br reservations they won't be able to tell you about the location details of your room. I live in MD and in the Spring they seemed to be about a month behind in terms of tree budding and spring flowers.

Thanks Sally, it does seem to fit the bill for a fall getaway....I was able to see on the RCI Mobile site that it is room 432...I am hoping 4 means the top floor? As it is a fractional I imagine you get the unit deposited? Any location unit info is appreciated.

      I will bring my earplugs.....

Prime color this year was first week in October. We were a little further south (new paltz/Minnewaska) October 13 and it was gorgeous, maybe slightly past super peak.

I imagine I might have to drive to see some color but that is okay.
Lots to do in the area.

Yes, lots to do if you don't mind driving a bit from home base each day. I HIGHLY recommend going to Lake Minnewaska - be sure to drive all the way up the road to the top before you park, and plan to walk/hike a bit. The stunning beauty up there never ceases to amaze me. Also check out Howe Caverns - in the opposite direction (I think) from Hunter, definitely worth the drive. I'm sure there is more right around Hunter, I'm just not as familiar with the immediate surrounds there.
