PS - We saved Acadia for a whole day's trip. On another day we drove up to Belfast via the Knox and Penobscot Narrows sites, stopping at both. Belfast has a nice waterfront walk as well.

Fort Knox is a bit interesting from a historical point of view and there is an elevator on the bridge there that you can take up to get a great view of the area, but I haven't been up there yet. During high tourist season motels and hotels in Bar Harbor are pricey. There are plenty of options on route 3 south of Ellsworth. Some may be closed for the season tho. Lots to do in the area, tho some things will have shut down. There's an LL Bean outlet store in Ellsworth, but they rarely have really good bargains. Ellsworth also has several grocery stores and a Walmart along with other stores like Maine's own Reny's. Ellswoth also has hotels and motels in town and is about 18 miles or less from the park. Seawall in Manset (beyond SW Harbor) is an interesting rock shore.

I didn't see anything about a restaurant, only a motel. Can you look harder --- please
        Thanks

it is not a restaurant, It is a truck where you can get live lobsters to cook in the room, Pots are in the room, They also can make it for you on the truck. The truck is right near that hotel I posted if it is still there. A worker at The resort told us to go there as it was out of the tourist area and prices were geared to the locals

How great for you! I hope you have a fabulous time, I look forward to your trip report.

I once had an exchange to Samoset that I had to give up because a conflict arose, so never made it. I always planned to get there sometime until in the last few days, I confirmed an exchange to Maine for next summer, to Acadia Village Resort this time, since one of my resorts gave owners a free membership to II. I've been to Acadia a couple of times, but many decades ago. It'll be worth your drive up there.

I just got back here and I thank you for all the help.

Do I need to do just one night or should I do two?? I'm thinking two. Also found a cheap hotel right near the shuttle stop. it looks like an old turn of the century motel . It' 75 a night but I'm only going to sleep there . I'll go get the name and report back.

I'm heading up to Maine in less than 2 weeks. If I get a chance to go to Bar Harbor, Ill take a look at the motel. I've never stayed at a hotel in the Bar Harbor area.

Initially on short trips we stayed with relatives, but as time went on we started exchanging into Harbor Ridge Resort and then later Acadia Village resort. We like them both and when some came up for resale we bought at Acadia Village. How long you need to stay is up to your desires. You can pretty much see the main park in a long day, but other park sections will take more time. The Schoodic Penisula is about 50-60 miles away, and other parts and attractions are closer. The Jordan Pond House should be crossed off any list for meals as it has gone far downhill from when it used to be great. If you must have popovers, Asticou Inn is the place to go. Fort Knox is a really old fort and there is an elevator on the suspension bridge near the entrance that will take you up high for some nice views.

The main park: Cadillac mountain is a windy drive but it overlooks Bar Harbor and other great views, Sand Beach is just what it says- not much wave action and the water rarely hits above the mid 50's, Thunder Hole- makes a thundering sound at times, but not as often as before they "fixed" it. Thunder comes at certain times of day and certain conditions and there's a small chance you will hear it most of the time, Otter Rocks is a rocky coastline area, There's a horse stable and carriage roads just after the Northeast Harbor exit and before the pond house, Jordan Pond has a trail around it and sometimes it gets a bit wet and slippery, Balancing Rock has a trail up to it that will give you a bit of a cardiac workout- last time we walked up there an earthquake occurred while we were up there- didn't know about it till the evening news. There's more, but mostly they are not major attractions. We once did the Eagle Lake trail, but we were younger then and didn't know it was around 8 miles.

Thanks again Tony. Well I reserved Arcadia Pines for 2 nights. She gave me a rate of $69 a night. I have to take it easy so there will be no hiking. found a photograph cruise which I'd like to do at sunset. They look pretty full so will call tomorrow. Can you tell I'm getting excited !!1 I thought lobster was going to be cheap up there. NOPE, Who has the best lobster rolls??

Not a lobster fan, but the best is a couplr of hours from the park in Wiscassett at a place called Red's.
