      Rosecliff

      September 5, 2006 - Tuesday Afternoon

      For our sixth Newport Tour
      We went to Rosecliff

Rosecliff Mansion is located on Bellevue Ave
It has been the setting for many Hollywood
films, including The Great Gatsby & True Lies

We did a guided tour of the first floor
a self guided tour of the second floor

We may have to go back & do this one again because
I do not remember alot about the history of the house

Plus we only have a few photos of the exterior too

        The Marble House

        September 6, 2006 - Wednesday

        For our seventh Newport Tour
        We went to Marble House

Here you park across the street and walk over to the entrance

Marble House was built for Railroad Baron William K. Vanderbilt and
his wife Alva Vanderbilt. The house is located on Bellevue Avenue

This house offers a - Self Guided Tour - As you enter the Mansion
you are Welcomed and a staff member hands you a Personal Audio
Device and Headset. You start the device by a mirror and as you
walk thru the house - you listen to stories about each room & the
people who lived in the house - This is truly a Grand Marble House

Behind the house and almost to the edge of the back lawn
overlooking Cliff Walk (tunnels) and to the left The Breakers
you will discover a beautiful Oceanfront Chinese Tea House

The Tea House was closed during our visit due to restoration

As you walk back up towards the front of the Mansion
Stay on the left side of the house and lawn. Once you
get up beside the front of house - turn towards
the right and look at the side view of the house

This is one of the best vantage points to capture a great photo
of you and/or your family standing outside of The Marble House

The Marble House is one of our Favorite Newport Mansions

          The Elms

          September 6, 2006 - Wednesday

          For our eighth Newport Tour
          We went to The Elms

Here we parked our car in a shaded parking
lot area along the left side of the property

The Elms is located on Bellevue Avenue
The Elms offers both a a self guided tour
and a Rooftop and Behind-the-Scenes Tour

Today, we did the self guided tour but we plan to go back
one day next week to do the Personal Guided Tour of the
Rooftop, Kitchens, Third floor Staff Quarters & Wine Cellar
Once inside the house we received a personal audio device

Just as we started our tour, a bus group arrived & came in
We waited to let them go ahead and then we took our time
walking around the mansion - We walked up the grand stairs
At the top of the landing was a huge heavy table...
It has never been moved! After viewing the upper floor
We had a staff member escort us by private elevator to
the lower level. Here you will find the Kitchen and Gift Shop

In one section of the basement there was a photo display
of historical homes that are no longer around - Some due
to fire and others due to development - Really sad to see
& read how many old homes and mansions have been lost

The Elms was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1996

We plan to go back to The Elms next week and walk around
the beautiful grounds and have lunch at The Carriage House

We purchased a CD about The Elms to listen to and to help us learn
more about this Beautiful Newport, RI Mansion and all of its owners.

Thanks for the timely post and bumping up this thread Marti! We are seriously considering Newport for the holidays this year. This will come in handy as ammunition to use on DH.

Just got back from week at Wyndham Newport OnShore yesterday.
The three mansions previously mentioned are open daily and decorated in super fashion. Also there are a couple of privately owned mansions that have Christmas stuff. Belcourt Castle is fully decorated and has candlelight tours and one night a week a "ghost tour". The Astor's Beechwood Mansion has a resident theater troup that act as the "family" during the tour of the mansion and talk and answer questions and after the tour everyone goes to the ballroom where they entertain with some Christmas songs etc.
Many of the local restaurants have special deals with two dinners plus a bottle of wine for anywhere from $24 to $30.
There are various concerts etc. going on at churches and other places around town.
The schedule for events is at: The 38th Annual Christmas in Newport Celebration
They started doing this 38 years ago to get folks to go there in winter as well as in summer. The events take place all during December.
We have been to this three times including this year and have always had a great time.

I haven't checked the new prices, but a few years ago, we bought a year's membership and it got us into unlimited tours - and got us to the front of the line. I think it paid for itself if you planned to do 3 or more houses.
