  • Timeshare for log cabins/camping in Northeast?

    Hi all, I'm new here so please bear with me if I should be asking stupid questions. Myself, the missus and our 2 boys usually take a few days vacation 3 times a year [spring, summer and winter]. Myself and the older son like the outdoors [fishing/camping] but the wife and younger son prefer the indoors and they are pc addicts so we have to always try to get something which will suit us both.

    For the above reasons we can't go to camping grounds and since I personally wish to have some level of privacy we don't wish to rent a cabin that's clustered around other cabins. In the summer we would like to rent a cabin/cottage where we could do some fishing and in the spring and winter we would like something in the woods, I have 2 relatives who own timeshares but they are on "Resorts" so I don't think this is for us.

    From what I have mentoned above, is a timeshare something we should be looking into in the first place? Do people have timeshares for cabins/camping areas and such?

    There are so many timeshares that I am positive that many will suit your needs. I own at 2 different resorts in GA. Both would be what you want. Brassie knob villas is set overlooking a golf course, River and the Smokey mountains. there are a total of only 6 units which 4 are huge the other 2 are a bit smaller. They are all on the ledge of the mountain. There are no activities at that resort but you can use all of the amenities at Sky Valley resorts which is the other resort that I own. Sky valley has, Internet, Library, basketball courts, Tennis, Huge out door pool, Hot tub, Church even and A very large water fall on site. Sky valley is about a mile away from the other resort. In the area is Mines, Fishing, White water rafting and of course shopping with antiques shops.

      Appreciate the quick response Big Frank and please forgive me for not having mentioned that I live in Queens, NY and would like something in my area [Northeast]. From your description, I am not sure Villas would be for us which is why I mentioned specifically cabins/cottages mainly becuase we would prefer to have some privacy.

      How can I best go about looking for timeshares with my criteria in the Northeast?

            Closest I can think of is Moosehead Cottage resorts in Greenville, Maine. There is another in Jackman and one on the Rangely Lakes. The resorts consist of some log cabins in a rustic area with the main building housing a pool and other amenities. This certainly would not be the Abe Lincoln kind of rustic, but it;s about as close as timeshare may come. The buildings are log cabin type, usually with 2 or 3 bedrooms and all the conveniences of home. You could fish not too far away at a large lake, small ponds and rivers/streams.

              Thanks, will definitely look into all of those you've mentioned and I like the idea of Maine and also Philly. Mainly I want a cabin when I come outside there isn't one right next door so we can sit or be out front without neighbors staring at us, if we have to do this we may as well stay home

              I would prefer an authentic log cabin [Davy Crockett style] to make you feel like you're living outdoors but as long as the cabin is made of wood and has indoor plumbing, that would be fine [that made no sense at all, right?]. We won't be using any amenities because that's why we're looking for this, to get away from people.

              So to sum this up we need a cabin that's situated for the most part by itself or away from other cabins with indoor plumbing/heating close to fishing, for the summer, doesn't matter other times, that's all we are seeking.

                Well at our stay at Moosehead in June we saw only a few people and sat outside quite a bit. I'm a bit more social, so I missed talking to people. The cabins are about as far apart as residential homes in some places. Upstate Maine is a good place to be if you want to be (mostly) away from people. Things will be a bit more crowded in the summer though.

                  I merged both threads together to here. Now that I know we are Neighbors since I live in Middle village Queens, I can help out a bit more since I know where you are coming from.

                  These are a few that would work out for you.

                  These 2 are located in the Poconos.
                  Split rock Resort, Shawnee resort,

                  In Killinton the Killinton Grand Resort

                  In Maine there are a few ,The Grand Jordan, Sunday River. And right near by in NH theres a few to.

                  Here in NY if you like Salt water fishing and want a beach resort and Spa. Gurneys in Montauck. There is also Friar Tuck in the Catskills. In the Adirondack's you have Lake George cabins.

                  If you are willing to do a trip up to Canada. There is a resort called Horse Shoe resort in Barrie Ontario. You can have all your sports there and your wife can enjoy the Spa wraps at a quarter of the price.

                    @Tony
                    I have always liked Maine, Philly and CT in particular. We are planning on moving to CT in the future so maybe I should look into things there while I'm at this. I am not anti-social, as a matter of fact I/we are exactly the opposite, our home is the stronghold of our family and my mom is the Head of the family so it's always crowded here especially on the weekend year round which is why we have to leave home to get some peace and quiet and privacy. We already booked a cottage in the Poconos for this Xmas weekend, if we desire to leave our home every xmas does that tell you how much we yearn for Peace and quiet and privacy? No disrespect meant to any of our relatives and friends/visitors.

                    @Big Frank
                    Hey Neighbor, yeah we are close by, we live just outside JFK, we wish to stay within 3 hours drive, from searching the net for Cabins, looks like the Adirondacks has it all but too far for us. I will look into all of the places you've mentioned, thanks.

                    So guys, we have already booked a Cottage on Lake Ariel in the Poconos for Xmas weekend, while we're there we will look at the 2 Resorts mentioned. I guess a Resort might work for us becuase we have been doing basically the same thing 3 times a year in the past. We would always book and stay at the Resorts Hotel in Atlantic City and do the fishing which is right there in the surrounding areas, however, in the Winter, the one thing a Hotel/Casino does not provide is a kitchen and I think especially at Xmas time, this is essential.

                    I would prefer to "rent" a timeshare at first to experience things firsthand before looking into purchasing one. How can I go about looking for rental timeshares please?

                      Go to the website navigation and click on the classifieds and check the for rent. You can find plenty to buy there as well. The question you should have is are you buying strictly to use or do you plan on trading with an exchange company.

                        Can you briefly explain what this means please? I will look at the classifieds in a while, thanks.

                          What this means is are you going to be using your home resort if you plan on buying it. Or do you plan on using it for trading with lets use www.rci.com as an example.

                          If you are unsure what I am talking about then, I would post a new thread in the timeshare economics forum so you can start learning. That is where you can learn a lot from the people who know best.

                            Before I go any further with posting questions here and wasting anyone's time, I thin it's best I wait and talk with my 2 cousins this weekend who own Timeshares, after speaking with them I'll get back here with any questions, will look into the areas you've mentioned in the meantime, get back to you guys here, thanks.
