It was terrific. I've been covered up since I got home so haven't been on the Internet much, but will be on business travel for two weeks starting Sunday. I'll try to write a review while I'm sitting around a hotel in my off time.
The weather was very pleasant. Rain was predicted for two mornings, but in fact we just had drizzle for an hour or so one day and the sun came out.
We went to the cranberry bogs, but they had already harvested everything close to the parking area, so we didn't see anything. We did have a truck load of them on the ferry when we came back across.
Ferry slots were tough for the van. I didn't think I'd really need a reservation in October, but hadn't anticipated there would be 32 weddings on the island that week. One couple rented the entire White Elephant resort for four days and put up 10,000 square feet of tents (with plywood floors and brand new carpet). Just watching the prep was quite a show. Had we not left the island early Saturday, I would have tried to eavesdrop on the festivities from the Children's Beach.
When I found out the ferry was going to be a problem, we reserved the only spot left, which was on the last boat back on Saturday, but got on a waiting list. We wound up taking the freight boat Saturday morning, which worried me a bit, but was actually quite pleasant on a nice day. I've heard it's not as nice if the seas are rough because of the spray going over your vehicle.
It wasn't really beachy weather. A couple of days it was too windy and cold even for a walk. Three days it was nice enough to play around on the beach for a while.
We hit the last two days for the season of the Hospital Thrift Store. Thursday everything was half price. Friday everything was free. DH had his eye on a wooden goose that he was dying for, but even at half of $125, it wasn't in our budget. Unfortunately, it was not there the next morning, even though we were at the front of the line. I don't know if someone bought it or they just put the expensive stuff away for next year.
We found a guy at the "take it or leave it" unloading three old lobster traps and took one. I wish we had grabbed all three, because it turns out my daughter wanted one as well. We saw an identical one for sale at an antique store here Saturday for $65. As always, lots of fun stuff there. Someone beat me to the Compaq laptop and some other great things, but we did find some goodies.
DS12 wound up playing piano during the open buffet at the Nantucket Artists Association Wet Paint Auction. They give the artists something like 48 hours to create their paintings and they were marvelous. We watched a few sell, but they were more than we could afford and the crowd was terrible, so we left.
We ate at the Brotherhood for tradition's sake, but mostly ate in. Didn't get to get out and catch any fish this time.
Generally it was just a fun, relaxing week. The 1000 mile drive each way I could live without, but we made pretty good time both ways with no major delays. Had trouble finding an affordable room in Rhode Island, but the other two stops we found nice rooms at reasonable costs.
