  • What Broadway play for 14 yr old girl?

We will be in NYC for a long 5 day Memorial Day weekend. We have tickets to Spamalot already. Was thinking about adding a second. We have already seen Wicked and Mamma Mia.

      A Chorus Line
Avenue Q (depends on the 14yo, it's quite racy)
      Chicago (also racy)
      Hairspray (perfect for this age)
Les Miserables (don't know how the production is holding up)
      Rent (also racy)
      Putnam County Spelling Bee
      Producers
Apple Tree (DH just took our 12yo to see this and she liked it)

Wicked would be my absolute top choice.

Yeah, but she said they'd already seen it.

I agree it is a great show though. Both of my dds loved it. They have also loved:

              Chicago
              Phantom of the Opera
Chorus Line (which I already mentioned)
              Lion King (already mentioned)
              Fiddler on the Roof
              Mama Mia
              The Color Purple
              Luanne

Is Hairspray still running? My daughter loved that one.

This revival of A Chorus Line is missing something.

It's rather "talky" for a 14 year old; lacks variety ( no stimulating sets) and for what it's worth my group of 19-21 year old nieces who are Broadway and city savvy found it underwhelming. Me too.

Color Purple would be great for a girl that age, and I loved it. An excellent Broadway production.
Putnam County Spelling Bee is fun
there is a new musical comedy with David Hyde Pierce opening soon, looks fun, I posted a thread on it earlier, it's called Curtains
Altar Boyz, great fun for that age (and we enjoyed it too), super theatre, discounts usually available.

Definitely NOT Spring Awakening, though she'd probably like the music (the critics may disagree with me, and I think it will win some awards, but not for the storyline).

There is another big musical starting previews soon called The Pirate Queen; it opens on April 5th, watch for reviews. If they're good, it'll sell out for your dates fast. Reviews for the Chicago run were mixed, but the show will go through a lot of revisions before it opens in NY.

                      Done-A Chorus Line ,Wed. matinee

I went ahead and got tickets for A Chorus Line. My dd is a dancer, and I think she will love it. Hudson, I bet it will not be as spectacular as the original 16 years ago, but my dd is not a very critical audience yet.
So many great plays, so little time.
Thank you all for your suggestions.

I think that your DD will really enjoy this play, and you will too. I loved it!!!!! I bet that she's gonna want to get the soundtrack too. Really fun!!

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

I'll second Altar Boyz. We loved it. I'm wondering why Tarzan was not mentioned. We are taking our grandkids in 2 weeks.

I think the reason it's not as spectacular as the original is because the original was just that............a new idea. I've seen several productions from the original Broadway cast (in Los Angeles) to a small town semi-pro production to the revival in San Francisco. I've loved it each time I've seen it. I did warn my dds not to expect the staging of say "Phantom of the Opera". . But, they both loved it. My younger dd is very much into dance and I think she really appreciated it because of the subject matter and seeing it from the dancers' point of view.

                              Arline,

Let us know how you and yours like it. I didn't mention it because there are other things I think geared a little 'older' that a 14 yr old girl would enjoy...

I think the OP made a good choice with A Chorus Line, though I haven't seen this production, but it's a great story and the production isn't supposed to be all that different from the original. But surely you will see more than one show???
