We are leaving early morning so I may not be around much on Monday. Will report back tomorrow night.

We left at 9am and got there at around noon. We were starved from the ride so we stopped right by the School for Pizza. They had all different types of slices so we tried them. It was surprisingly very good considering where we were.
This was the first School we looked at and my son loved it. We have another Polytechnic School to look at tomorrow but I can tell that RPI will be hard to top. I was very impressed as was my son. Only draw back is that it is far away and that does not make for a happy Mom.

Coming Home I had wanted to eat at a Restaurant that Marty had emailed me but I forgot to print out the name and address. We got off the Palisades and ate at a Japanese restaurant that I wanted to try for years called I think it was Kyko on route 9w. I bet Lawren knows the place since she lives not far from there.

Frank, are you going to look at Stevens in Hoboken? We have a good friend who went there and loved it.

Wow funny you mentioned Stevens. My Sons best friend Mat just got accepted there. I was talking to his Dad on the way home and he was raving about the School. Since my sons best friend is going there I am sure my son will look into it. Tomorrow we are going to Brooklyn Polytechnic.

My DD went to an open house at Stevens last summer--if you get on their e-mail list, your son will get an invite. It was a whole day of engineering activities for the kids and talks about financial aid and programs for the parents, lunch for everybody. The campus is about ten minutes from NYC via PATH and it has a spectacular view of the city, plus tons of co-op programs and internships.

But...we like RPI better for my DD. I think that's probably where she's going to end up, if she gets in.

BTW--please post after you've seen Polytechnic, Frank. Do they have a real campus? We talked to them at DD's HS's college night and I wasn't sure. I think they do have dorms. How's the neighborhood?

They told us at RPI that they were one of the new top 25 Ivie league Schools. My wife went looking for Proof. Not sure if this really counts.

Yeah, I've seen that article. The problem is that there are so many top, top kids that they can't possibly fit into the Ivies, and there are more HS seniors than ever before. So the schools that were traditionally very good but overshadowed by the Ivies are now attracting many more kids than ever before. RPI's applications went up some crazy huge percentage last year. We're also looking at Carnegie Mellon for my DD and they've had the same thing, huge jump in applications, much tougher to get in than it used to be.

Our kids are on the tail end of the baby boomer's baby boom. The total number of HS seniors peaked this year, next year will be a little better (slightly fewer HS seniors), and then by the time we get to my youngest (who's turning 8 this month), college admissions will be much easier. So they say.

Of coarse it was , Much smaller,r Dorms were newer , Bigger and nicer than RPI. They gave us a one on one tour. The Admin Officer said my son has a good shot at a full Scholarship if not full then close to it. My son is leaning toward RPI. The area itself near Brooklyn Poly is not the best but around inside the shared community park it seems safe.

Wow, full scholarship! We're hoping DD will probably get some aid at RPI b/c they always want girls and supposedly they're good with aid in general. But not a free ride. That's pretty tempting.

Did you know RPI has this thing called the Rensselaer Medal? Your HS chooses one kid a year to get it and it means an automatic $15K per year scholarship if the medalist goes to RPI. Your son should talk to his GC about it if he's interested in going there. The medalists also get a special nonbinding early application.

Yes we were told about the Medal yesterday. My Son has to check with his HS when he gets back.
IMO , If the Brooklyn Poly gave my son a full Scholarship then that might be the only way he would go there. I rather he went to RPI. We are going to look into Stevens and maybe even Stoneybrook as well as Cooper Union.

RPI is better than Polytechnic. Also even if your kid doesn't get the medal, the financial aid is pretty good there.

My DD's guidance counselor wanted her to look at Cooper Union but we want her to go somewhere with a real campus. She's not very street-smart so we've eliminated NYU, Polytechnic, Cooper Union--anywhere where basically the city is the campus.

Did your DS look at Columbia's Fu School of Engineering?

And there's NJIT and NYIT but they're not supposed to be very good.

DH went to SUNY Stony Brook for grad school back in the 1970s. That was in English though. It was a brand-new school back then! Now it's the pride of the SUNYs, right?

                            Frank,
Glad you had a good trip. Sorry that I wasn't around most of the day today or I would have tried to make arrangements to meet you as I just live about 15 miles north of Albany and Troy.
As I had said before RPI enjoys a pretty good rep as an Engineering School. The campus isn't too bad although the city of Troy is kind of run down. It's close to Albany tho and just up the road you have Saratoga.

Right now it is between RPI and Stevens in NJ, I think he is leaning to-wards Stevens because it is closer and his best friend is going there. I feel RPI is bigger but I can't say I like what he wants to do in the first place. His grades and SAT shows me he should become a Lawyer or Dentist or Doctor. I rather he worked for himself rather than work for a company as an engineer.
