  • Any thing to do around Troy NY?

I have to drive about 3 hours to get here early this week. We have to go see a College there for my son and will only be around an hour or so in the School. Anything going on in that area that we should look at or better yet on the way back home to Queens , any stops I should do? Is this by chance close to Cooperstown?

Frank, Troy is outside of Albany. Nowhere near Cooperstown....
If you need a great place for late lunch, dinner I suggest the Beekman Arms in Rheinbeck. The oldest Inn in America. Great food. Cute town. Lots of antiquing if you or Jackie are into that. Then you can drive home down the Taconic Pkwy.

It is primarily used for baseball, and is the home field of the Tri-City Valley Cats

"The Joe" is situated on the campus of Hudson Valley Community College.
Designed by Clough Harbour & Associates, it opened April 6, 2002

          Hi Frank,
Are you going to visit RPI? Good school. My husband and several friends and co-workers graduated from there.

It's been a long time since I've been in that part of NY but you could do a search on Albany for things to do. You might want to tour some of the state buildings in Albany. I also know there are some nice state parks in the area, but nothing out of the ordinary - especially this time of year.

I'd never heard about it either until my high school boyfriend went there. But I've since found out that "everyone" in engineering knows about and admires the school's reputation.

I think there are a lot more women there now. When my first husband (high school sweetheart) went there, his class had about 8 women. When my second husband went there, the class had way more women - he's a few years younger, I robbed the cradle when I remarried. . I'm sure the ratio is even better (from a man's point of view) than it was then. That seemed to be one of the main complaints the guys had back in the day - no women around, except for Russell Sage College, a nearby women's school.

Watch out for deer if you take the Taconic. It also has lots of curves on the NYC side of the route 84 exits. RPI has a good reputation as a school.

Hey, my DD is going to be applying there next year! What is your son interested in studying?

We visited last fall. There's not a lot to do in Troy (and the school is pretty upfront about that), but there are things to do in Albany. We went to a nice brew-pub restaurant right by the river.

How are you making the visit last just an hour? We got the administration/financial aid talk (the guy was soooo bboooorrriing) andthen the walking tour (the tour guide was great but there were 50 people on the tour--everybody from NJ was there b/c we all had that week off) and it was at least three hours.

They give you a chit for lunch in the dining hall, too. This is off-season for campus tours, so they would probably let your son sit in on a class or talk to professors if he wants to.

He is interested in Computer Enginering. He is leaning towards Brooklyn Polytechnic but wants to see other places. I was hoping he would go to NYU and study Law but this is what he wants.

My DD is interested in computer science or computer engineering. We've looked at a bunch of colleges and visited some. PM me if you need some ideas on where to look for your DS. BTW, my sister and BIL are engineers and they LOVE RPI, think it's a great school.

Is your son outgoing, like a lawyer? Usually the lawyer types and the engineering types aren't the same kids! If he's outgoing, he can do very very well with engineering--my BIL is an outgoing, friendly guy with kind of a sales personality, and he's been very successful.

                          Frank,
RPI is a very good (somewhat expensive, but you already know that by now) engineering school. Excellent reputation. Usually a pretty decient hockey team, except this year.
The campus is pretty spread out around the one section of Troy.
But there is not much to do in Troy itself. Saratoga is about 45 minutes north on 87. Nice little town, lots of restaurants and shops etc. If it was August, Saratoga has what I think is NY's nicest flat track but still a very nice town this time of year. Troy is right across the river from Albany, state capital, some sights there but probably not much your son would be interested in at least not in the daytime. There are some fairly good restaurants there but I like the ones up in Saratoga better as I like Saratoga better.
We were at NYU this weekend, just got home from visiting my older son who just took a job there a month ago. We had a great time. He got faculity housing just off Washington Square in the Village as part of his hiring. Great location, as he is 29.
Our younger son goes to Clarkson, up in Potsdam also an Engineering school with pretty good rep and verygood hockey. He graduates his year with Chemical Engineering degree and has decided to go to law school to do intellectual property (patent) law so you never know!!
Unfortunately Frank, Cooperstown is quite a ways west of Troy so not really on your path when visitig RPI.

Well, I've been to Troy and RPI too.

Troy is what in my youth was described as a working class suburb. Which then meant stay the hell away.

My oldest son decided he liked it and is about to graduate May.

I went on the college tour with him and asked such questions as where are the closest pubs, girls colleges etc.

He was embarrassed but still talks to me.

McGuire's is the ONLY place to eat in Albany area

In the Albany area, there is only ONE place to go. Any restaurant with CIA grad/ owner-chef Andrew Plummer is not to be missed. To eat Andrew's cooking and see his presentation is worth going way out of your way. He used to hold forth at his former restaurant townhouse on 2nd street in Troy drawing people from far and wide.....................now as McGuire's in Albany. Easy on/off from the main highways. Google "chef andrew plummer" for more accolades.

"Chef Andrew Plummer holds forth brilliantly in this nicely appointed restaurant that balances a menu of creative fare with an active social presence. There’s stuff happening with sauces you’ll have to taste to believe."
