  • Attention Shoppers ! Boston's Filene's Basement - Will Close for 2 Years

The original basement in downtown crossing - Washington Street = will close for two years at the end of August for major renovations.

Hoc, you'd better make a trip back here before the end of August.

    I'm taking this very badly.

Just breaks my heart. I am still not over Jordan Marsh and Filenes becoming Macy's. I want those blueberry muffins at Jordans and the ice cream at Filene's basement.

My mother took me there every Thursday when I was in grade school. It is where I learned to shop for automatic markdowns, brand names and quality fabric. How to try clothes on with no dressing rooms,no problem just wear a skirt.

I used to take the Saturday bus and ride 1 hr. into Boston in High School to shop there. This was way before there was a TJ Maxx or outlet stores.

It is also where I bought my Designer Wedding Dress for $19.99. Yes, $19.99Now that's incredible.

Mmmm, those Jordan Marsh blueberry muffins were the best...and somewhere, I still have a recipe. It's pretty close:

Ingredients: 1/2 cup butter (let it soften naturally if you have time), 2 eggs( room temperature), 2 cups flour, 1/2 tsp salt, 1 1/2 cups sugar, 1/2 cup milk, 2 tsp baking powder, 2 1/2 cups blueberries (fresh is better by far), 2 tbls coarse sugar for tops.
Directions: At low speed, cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time; mix well until blended.
Sift dry ingredients, add alternately with milk. Add 1/2 cup blueberries and stir by hand. Add rest of blueberries, stirring by hand, 1/2 cup at a time. Grease muffin pan with butter, flour the pan, and grease the top of pan (the muffins will spill over). Pile high in each cup. Sprinkle with sugar on top.
Bake in 350 degree oven for 25 to 30 minutes. Cool 30 minutes before serving. Eat and drool!

As for your wedding gown, good for you!!

This is actually good news to me because I thought I had read the Filene's sold out and the basement was gone permanently. At least it will apparently be back. I've never bought a lot there because I never seem to be in town long enough for the things I want to be marked down, but I always enjoy looking.

I did luck into some great bargains on Christmas ornaments upstairs once in January. I think they were 90% off. They were so fragile that I was afraid to ship them so I ask a co-worker who had driven up to take them home for me. When I got them from him a few weeks later, several were broken. Must have had something heavy on top of the box. Still have the survivors, though.

Have you ever been to the Filene's Basement store in Hyannis? I've eyed it every time we go past but never persuaded DH to stop.

This will sound confusing, but the Original Basement Store and the other Filene's Basement Stores are separate entitities. The other/satellite ones are related in name only.
Now, to add to the mix, Filene's is no longer. Macy's has replaced them. Now to confuse you even more, Jordan Marsh was Macy's here in Massachusetts and other places.

Yes it is confusing for someone like me

I'll be in Boston from Aug 6-9 staying at the Marriott Long Wharf. How do I get to the Original Basement Store that's going to be closed?

                Lisa,
I can give you directions now or better yet, just ask the front desk. Tell them you want to go shopping at Filene's Basement in Downtown Crossing. They can give you turn-by-turn directions.

OK, I did it. Looks like they're paring down their inventory. There was not as much when I was there over July 4th. Still got a shirt and a pair of pants, though.

                        One word for you: Toscanini's.

J.P. Licks isn't bad, though I like Toscanini's burnt caramel flavor better.

And, while in Boston, try the Sticky Buns at flour Bakery.

Just got back from Boston. I went to Filene's Basement (about a 10-minute walk from Marriott Long Wharf) on Monday night. Unfortunately I didn't know the store closes at 8 pm so I only had 20 minutes to shop. I wanted to go back later but the rest of my schedule was completely full

Oh well, may be in two years...
