  • Catching speeding with EZPass

NOt sure if there is truth to this or not.

New York State started a pilot program upstate north of Albany on the Northway to catch speeders using the Easy Pass system. Recording devices were installed at intervals along the highway. Once an Easy Pass equipped vehicle passes, the device registers the account number and the time. Same is again registered at the next "check-point". Based upon the distance between the register poits and the posted speed limit, the state is sending speeding tickets in the mail to the guilty persons.

Because every driver does not have Easy Pass, the State is "perplexed" as what to do to impose the system state-wide. The solution has been found. Soon all new vehicle registration stickers will have a metal strip or chip imbedded in same. This will take the place of the Easy Pass system as stated above. When a vehicle passes the registering device, the strip will relay all the information.

This is not fictional. New York State contracted with VERIZON to install the system. The system has already been installed and the entire Bronx River Parkway in Westchester County has been "wired" for when the new system begins. Once the State makes the new program public and advises all motorists of the potential for numerous speeding tickets, it will also reveal that the system has already been installed.

Another reason that will be given for the new system is to enable the authorities to track stolen vehicles, to trace kidnap victims, to monitor and trace suspected criminals and terrorists, etc.

Geez, I guess I have to leave my EasyPass home when I am going north since the Northway is non toll and only take it when going on the toll roads.
Frank, do you know if these new sensors work the same way as the ones that check EasyPass at toll booths, if so if the EP is in your glove box they won't be able to read it.
    Anyway, "Big brother is watching".

          Frank,

Not sure about he metal strips in the Reg sticker, but the toll plaza's on the NJ tpke track speedsters and issue tickets. I take the Bronx River Parkway everyday, so I will look for those sensors for sure. If I get a warning I will be sure to let everyone know. We do about 70 on the BRP daily.

This kind of thing exists elsewhere, so why not here.

Don't like it just as I don't like unmarked cars. There is a reason I don't like it.

Yes, I've heard they already do this on the NJ turnpike. But you have to be FLYING. They're not looking for people going 70 in a 65 mph zone.

I have to wonder about the legality of issuing speeding tickets based upon such a method. It's always and only the DRIVER of a vehicle who is solely responsible for adhering to speed limits while operating a motor vehicle (NOT the registered owner).
In my own family, any one of 4 people could be operating any given vehicle in the household at any given time. I cannot imagine that it's actually lawful to give ME a speeding ticket for a vehicle in NY while I'm actually in Chicago, for example....

That's the speed everyone is pretty much doing on the turnpike. Going back and forth to Baltimore, we easily can get up to those speeds.

A friend of ours got a speeding ticket because of the easy pass program. My husband got a warning because he drove too fast through an easy pass scanner. He supposedly drove too fast, but the machine had no problem scanning the easy pass because the warning was sent in the mail!

There are sections of the BRP in Yonkers where the posted speedlimit is 45 mph. Doing 70 in a 45 is a problem.

Yes, but the legislation that permits this doesn't allow points on the owner's license, it's just a cash cow... so if you're driving your own car and get popped, you get off easy

Courts threw out Minneapolis camera cop tickets since it was the owner of the car and wasn't the driver being given the ticket. All fines that were paid have to be refunded.
