  • FINALLY Autumn colors are here

This is the time of year when I'll take the long way home from work, cross the resevoir and look at the brilliant colors across my little part of the lower Hudson. When I go that way there are very few homes in the way and I look west across Rockland towards the Ramapo mountains.

    Absolutely stunning.

We'll ride out in Rockefeller Preserve tomorrow just to enjoy. I'll try to remember to recharge my camera tonight and take some pictures to share.

Well past prime here and prime wasn't really great this year except for a few scattered spots. Today's wind took more leaves down, so it's getting near raking time here. Some talk of snow flurries Friday or Saturday.

Past prime here too, and the colors were not as vibrant this year, or was it just in my head

        Lawren,

Too bad I will be working from home tomorrow. I need to stay and wait here for the tile guy to fix broken tiles in my stall shower.

Where do you normally ride in Rockefeller? Do you go to the entrance on Rt 117? From there which trail do you take?

Do you ride over Rt 9 where the NYLife campus is located?

        Park Map

Looks like you would have to take the Old Croton Aquaduct Trail over Rt 9. The view of the Hudson from the Foundation Loop is stunning this time of year! I must walk up there at lunch on Friday!

          Billy your timing stinks!

We cover a lot of ground and hardly ever ride the same way twice. A big favorite is 13 bridges to the lookout but we get over your way once in a while too via OCA trail.

The new favorite of the moment is along the Pocantico because we found a trail with jumps built on it.

We usually get over there at least twice a month on Thursdays so keep posted.

Had a lovely ride. It is hard not to over at the Preserve. Got within 10 feet of a HUGE 10 point buck who just stood there as I pulled out my camera and took a picture of him. Guess he knows no one is shooting him huh?

Surprisingly we get very close to deer quite often on horseback both there and at our local place.

Rode up to the lookout and to my complete surprise many of the trees hadn't even started changing yet but we took some pictures anyway! We can't get there next week so will probably miss the best color.

So I have the pictures in my trusty Sony .... but I can't find the USB cable. I'll keep looking for it.

              Please find that cable Lawren.
In central NJ, not all that much is happening. I have a stand of trees in the back of the house and the oak is still green and the maples have turned a bit, sort of red, but they are not vibrant. I was just thinking that this morning, not as spectacular in years past.... Sort of like a red smugglers float in September, you know, a pink red not a hot red

Yes this may be the straw the breaks the camel's back and I will have to CLEAN MY HOUSE I mean it's clean but the NAFS has got to be gone through.

We have only had one hard frost so far and that was night before last.

Hope you are enjoying seeing the colors. Here the predominant colors right now are pink and red. As in roses, huge, cabbage size roses. Its been unseasonably warm, and evidentally it tricked our roses.

Tuesday it was a record setting 84º. "Normal" for this time of year is about 67º. By Sunday we should be about 71º they say.

                    As promised some pictures.

The buck who stood 10 feetfrommeuntil I took his picture:

and a picture of Triton and I from the overlook with the Hudson River in the background

as you can see the trees haven't turned yet...

Nice pics Lawren! But I'm confused...your saddle has a horn (I think?) but you're holding the reins with both hands. Are you riding English or Western?

Sharon I am actually holding my helmet in my right hand for the shot. I never ride without wearing one.

I am an old school english rider and use the western tack when we ride out as it is easier to tie things on like water and lunch. But in most cases I will use both hands and post to the trot. So, West-lish.

Hey you found the cable - guess you cleaned the house - at least something good came from it.
Thanks for the photos. Nice to see.

I can tell you the trees have finally turned

Thursday as I was going east on Rt 117 at 4:00pm the Sun was casting light against the spectacular fall colors. Today (Friday) was great as well.

Lawren, What time of the day do you usually ride at Rockefeller. Next week is the holiday, do you think you will make the trip? I need an excuse to get away from the office. Please do let me know when you plan to ride in the park. My friend and I (Liliana) she posts OY every now and then would like to come out and meet you and your horse(s).

Billy we get there at around 11 and leave around 2. Unless I would like to end up in divorce court, Thanksgiving is out but maybe Friday...will let you know.

and yes the leaves are still spectacular here. I can't remember ever them being this late.
