I heard on the news tonight that Sunday River just got 8-10 inches of natural snow. I also heard that the snow guns have been going in Killington and they're open.
I was at Killington earlier this week and they definitely were NOT open. They were blowing snow and signs posted around the gondolas indicated their intention to open on Saturday 11/16, but I saw a whole lot of brown and very little white.....
I can't dispute what you saw, but apparently Killington opened today (Nov 16) and this is what was on their website:
Open Trails: 17
Open Lifts: 4
Miles of Skiing: 6
Surface Conditions: Packed Powder / Machine Groomed
New Snow 24 hours: 4"
New Snow 48 hours: 4"
New Snow 7 days: 4"
Average Base Depth: 18" - 24"
Since I don't ski, I don't know how good or bad this is.
Killington apparently met its projected opening date of 11/16, just as openly posted around the gondolas when I was there several days before that date (when they definitely were not yet open). With current (and still rising) gas prices, it's gotta be expensive to run all that snowmaking equipment 24/7 --- and grooming machines through the night. I don't want to think too hard about what lift ticket prices will be this year....
