Best Knishes In NYC?

If you want to stay in Manhattan, I like Zabar's knishes! I haven't had them in years, but I remember them as ultra-good. Yonah Schimmel's are just as unpleasant as you're describing, plus the ones I had were kind of sour-tasting, not like they were spoiled but like there was something sour used in the filling to make it look fresher...maybe citric acid? Ugh.

Zabar's used to have a wonderful selection of fillings, including sweet potato, mushroom, potato and mushroom, all sorts of tasty choices. I think I have to go get me some!

Are you talking about the one on the upper west side? Something like Broadway and 78th? My aunt used to rave about their lox (I hate lox), and I remember going there once to get it for her. It's right near H & H Bagels, so I could do both in a single subway trip.

I am at Cigarfest at Splitrock resort on may 2nd but am not staying all week. Lets make plans for the 8th or 9th for lunch. Now if you want to go out at night for Wings I got a great place for Wings.

The 8th for lunch is probably better. Let me know the wings place, though I probably will lobby against it. But she likes spicy foods, especially wings.

Yes, there's only one Zabar's, 80th and Broadway.

ok THE 8TH LETS SAT 12:30PM for lunch. Wings place is called Filmores tavern. Best you ever had or I am paying. It is located in fresh meadows. We generaly go out on Thursdays or friday nights and do a father and son wing night. We get about 10 tptal that goes.

That's because NYC bagels aren't made right. They have to be boiled, then baked. That's what gives them the chewy interior and the crispy crust. Rents are so high in New York that bagel stores can't do the boiling and baking on site. So usually they have ovens and they bake the pre-formed, par-boiled bagels in the store, but the quality isn't as good as it could be. Out in the 'burbs the stores have a little more room to spread out and some of them (including our local place) make "real" bagels. (Others just bring in the dough and cook it, like in NYC.)

I think H&H does do the boiling out on 12th Avenue, but I guess I just don't like their dough or something. I haven't had one in ages, but aren't they a bit sweet? And I've never gotten an H&H straight from the 12th Avenue H&H--I've gotten them after they've been shuttled somewhere else in the city, so they're probably not as fresh as they could be. Do you go right to the 12th Avenue place to buy them? I think it's 12th and 46th.

I live in queens and the bagel store was just up the block from the wine event you went to.
