  • Manning the Rails Fleet Week NYC

Always a favorite time for me in New York=!

All those wonderful ships. Many you can board and see this week. Not to mention all those young men in uniform. Although this is the smallest fleet week in my memory with only 5 ships in.

The opening procession will be led by the USS Kearsarge, a 40,500-ton amphibious assault ship that carries both helicopters and surface boats. Others are the guided missile cruisers USS Leyte Gulf and USS Monterey, and guided missile destroyers USS Nitze and USS The Sullivans.

Two Canadian frigates, HMCS Toronto and HMCS St. Johns, and an oiler, HMCS Preserver, and the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Ida Lewis round out the lineup

Welcome to NYC for 2008 all the Navy, Coast Guard and Marines!

    Fleet Week
    20 May 2008 - 26 May 2008

Held in the week leading up to and including Memorial Day, the annual Fleet Week is a colourful affair and a celebration of the various sea services. Thousands of sailors, marines and Coast Guardsmen from the US Navy and US Coast Guard as well as from international navy ships attend the celebrations with the main event taking place on Memorial Day itself. Visitors can enjoy live demonstrations of key maritime skills, take tours of ships and visit exhibitions explaining the ins and outs of life at sea. There is also an military aircraft display.
