  • Looking for good Xmas locations in driving distance of New York

My family wants to take an Xmas vacation this year, for the first time. We have been looking into Cruises, the Caribbean, Florida, etc., etc.....Actually, they're driving me crazy. I think we've been all over the map, at this point. We have teenagers, as well as grandma on this vacation, and they have very different ideas.

Now, with the increase in airfare, and the fact that my DD wants to bring 2 friends with her, we are considering driving. This would make it much more affordable for her friends, and easier on everyone, in general. Problem is, where can we go? We are not skiers, so not looking for a ski resort. I was thinking maybe Newport, because they could walk to town. I'm not really sure if there is much for the kids to do there, tho, in winter.

Any and all ideas, and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. TIA!!!

What's there for the kids to do? Anything in walking distance?

I take it that you don't like that idea.

Well Angela, my family is going to Mar Fairway Villas the day after Christmas - we have 3 units for 16+ peeps - and my friend who was tossing around where to go/ what to do decided to get 2 units for her family.

This is a definite change in what ALL of us would have done past years but with the current situation with airfare costs and the increasing CHALLENGE of flying in general, we all just decided to go local.

I know u usually go there in the summer....

The other area would be Williamsburg - think shopping and great stuff at Colonial W - but don't know if the young adults would find that very exciting.

Marriott Custom House - GREAT location with LOTS to do for the young people....but u would need 2 units

You know, I was thinking about NJ.....My mom loves AC, so she'd be very happy. I could even take the kids to Philly, for day. Plus there's Cape may. Hmmmm, I'm gonna pass that by everyone, and see what they say.

Williamsburg shopping......No my DD hates shopping. Breaks my heart that the apple has fallen so very far from the tree, but what can you do. Also, mom walks like a snail, in 5 " heels. No way I'm dragging her around shopping with me. It ain't pretty.

BTW, I can get two units in NJ, right now.

edited to add...I think that I would need 3 units in Boston. I'd probably have to get a seperate unit for my mom, one for the kids, and one for me & George. That may be too difficult, even at that time of year.

The problem is it is cold here and sometimes pretty damn miserable. Boston has possibilities if you can pull it off. Otherwise my answer is beach. But my answer is almost always beach.

Atlantic City sounds mildly amusing but not for a week.

Splitrock has everything inside the resort including a bowling ally, movie theater, game room, indoor tennis and full court basketball, indoor pool and spa. Snow sports are about 3 miles from the resort.

If we went to AC, the kids wouldn't have to stay for the week. Most likely, they wouldn't. But, they would be there for Xmas, and I think I could occupy them for a few days between AC, Philly, & Cape May.

I'm with you on the beach vacation. It's just the cost, and hassle of flying this year. Plus, I don't think my DD's friends have the money. They are both working, and going to college.

Thanks Frank. I will look into the resort, and pass it by everyone.

What do you guys think of Newport? Not that it's available, but just wondering.
