All those wonderful ships. Many you can board and see this week. Not to mention all those young men in uniform. Although this is the smallest fleet week in my memory with only 5 ships in.

The opening procession will be led by the USS Kearsarge, a 40,500-ton amphibious assault ship that carries both helicopters and surface boats. Others are the guided missile cruisers USS Leyte Gulf and USS Monterey, and guided missile destroyers USS Nitze and USS The Sullivans.

Two Canadian frigates, HMCS Toronto and HMCS St. Johns, and an oiler, HMCS Preserver, and the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Ida Lewis round out the lineup

Welcome to NYC for 2008 all the Navy, Coast Guard and Marines!

    Fleet Week
    20 May 2008 - 26 May 2008

Held in the week leading up to and including Memorial Day, the annual Fleet Week is a colourful affair and a celebration of the various sea services. Thousands of sailors, marines and Coast Guardsmen from the US Navy and US Coast Guard as well as from international navy ships attend the celebrations with the main event taking place on Memorial Day itself. Visitors can enjoy live demonstrations of key maritime skills, take tours of ships and visit exhibitions explaining the ins and outs of life at sea. There is also an military aircraft display.

NY Waterway - Take a Tour

NY Waterway Tours are offering two new cruises for sightseers around the rivers of Manhattan. One focuses on history, and another focuses on architecture. This is to compliment the other cruises that are taken by flocks of tourists and locals each year.

The history cruises is being collaborated with the New-York Historical Society. It dwells on four centuries of the city’s past compared to how things are nowadays. Sites featured on this tour include Governors Island, the former Coast Guard installation which was named Nut Island in the 1600s because of the nut trees that grew there. They also mention Bowling Green park’s significance in the Revolutionary War era as well as Chelsea Piers, an upscale recreation center on the Hudson river where the Titanic was set to dock. It runs Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m. and Saturdays at 12:00 p.m. through October 26.

The architecture cruise is being collaborated with the American Institute of Architects. The cruise features The Solaire in Battery Park City, the Museum of Jewish Heritage, the Battery Maritime Building, the New York Life Insurance Building, and others located in Brooklyn and New Jersey. This cruise points out the architectural significance of each of these buildings. This cruise runs Thursdays and Sundays at 12:00 p.m.

Both cruises are 90 minutes long. They depart from Pier 78 on West 38th Street and Twelfth Avenue. They head toward the Statue of Liberty, across New York Harbor, and up the East River on Manhattan’s East side to the United Nations before heading back to its pier. Tickets are $23 for adults, $13 for children, and $19 for seniors.

The tours company also offers other famed cruises. One is the “Lady Liberty Harbor” cruise that goes past the Statue of Liberty. The Staten Island ferry cruise goes about an hour round trip up to and around the Statue of Liberty. There is a 19th-century schooner called the Pioneer cruise as well. These ferries are operated by the Circle Line which will be run by the Hornblower Yachts, Inc. starting in October. They are the same ferry company that offers ferry rides to the Alcatraz Island prison in San Francisco.
