I just heard on the radio that some towns on Cape Cod are thinking about extending hotel-like taxes to condos and other units that are rented for less than 3 month periods. How many other places will think this is a great idea?
I think the whole thing comes down to the fact that revenues have been drastically reduced due to the recession. Towns are struggeling to provide services with reduced revenues. I think you will see this as a continued thing in many areas, especially those with a high dependency on tourist dollars.
We just had our property value (cape cod) lowered due to the selling prices of homes in our neighborhood being reduced over the past 18 months, but instead of our property taxes being reduced the town raised the tax rate.
