  • If You Were To Do One Astonishing Thing In New York, What Would It Be?

I've been to New York City nine or ten times over the past six years or so. Seen all of the tourist attractions (UN, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, TV and other Museums, Guggenheim, Brooklyn Museum, MOMA, MMA, Natural History, NBC and Rockefeller Plaza/Radio City Music Hall, the Churches, City Hall, Harlem tour, Walking tours of Greenwich Village and Chelsea Market, etc.), walked extensively through just about every neighborhood in Manhattan, and been to many shows/clubs/restaurants. I was even in the World Trade Center a few years before 9/11.

But on this upcoming trip (April 2-7), I was told that I had to pick one thing that I "must" do while there. My girlfriend has chosen the Guggenheim as her one thing because, as an artist, she never gets tired of it.

I have been to all of the museums, and my initial reaction is to choose the Museum of Natural History, since I've only been there once. But before I choose, I thought I would solicit ideas for something astonishing while I'm there. A walk across the Brooklyn Bridge? I've never done that. I've never been to the Cloisters. I hear the Tenement Museum is something to see. My dad grew up near Coney Island, but I hear that's a bit dangerous. I've never been in Carnegie Hall (despite a lot of practice ). Not a sports fan, so forget the games or Madison Square Garden.

So, if you had to pick only one thing to do, and you wanted it to be astonishing, what would it be?

Well, I don't think any of those things would be what would be considered "astonishing" in NYC. If you haven't been to the Cloisters, and appreciate religious art/architecture, you should go. You could go see what's playing at Carnegie Hall in the evening (check ahead, they don't have programs all the time, and what they have will most likely be classical).

If you haven't been to the Met Opera, that's a must in my book (check metopera.org to see if the season is still running, if you are so inclined).

Still, for astonishing... how about a drag club? Lips NYC!!! Or an evening at the Duplex on Christopher Street is a unique local experience (servers sing classic rock hits, it's quite something, the crowd is great)...

A walk across the Brooklyn Bridge could be great on a warm day - as a local, I have never done it but keep meaning to...

If you like Art Deco architecture, check out the Chrylser Building, and while you're in the neighborhood, stroll through Grand Central Station, the main room is awesome.

Those are my thoughts for the moment...

For a real fun time, and quite the eye opener, I vote for......

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

Of the things on your list, I would pick the Cloisters as the most unusual and the most unexpected in New York. Other ideas...

The Museum of the City of New York--not a tourist destination, very much the hometown museum.

I haven't been there in years, but the Tiffany lamps at the New-York Historical Society (which is pretty close to the Museum of Natural History).

Oh, I know the MOST New York-y thing! Shakespeare in the Park! That has to be it. You wait on line early in the day for free tickets, you have a picnic, and you go see the show in the evening.

I wouldn't use the word astonishing exactly, but the Tenement Museum had quite an impact on me - especially since it displayed so many aspects of my mother's childhood - right down to the floorplans, as well as the furnishings, the items, and the occupants' stories. It was like time-travelling ...

How you respond could depend on how much of your personal family history might be represented there - interestingly though, all the other folks on our little tours were from the UK!

It's really different from other museums in that they left the apartments basically intact, and tell the stories of the actual people who lived in them.

Plus afterwards, you can eat at Katz' (sp?) deli around the corner.

Why only one thing though? Why not several per day??

As a Bronx Girl - I second this idea - you can take Metro North ....

                  The New York Botanical Garden

TO THE GARDEN BY PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
By Metro-North Railroad: Take the Metro-North Harlem local line to Botanical Garden Station. Walk across Kazimiroff Boulevard to the Garden's Mosholu Gate entrance.
Just 20 minutes from Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan
                  Also convenient from other locations

I was told that I could pick one thing. She picks one, I pick one, and the rest is by consensus.

I think she would like the Orchids, though, so that won't be a hard sell.

There are so many really cool things to do in NYC but the one thing which I & DW always come back to is walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. If you can do it on a nice day it is really a cool thing to do and will not take you more than an hour.

PS then you can then take the subway down to Brighten Beach / Coney Island, eat at one of the Russian Restaurants ( even better food than my DW's Russian food and her's is great) on the boardwalk, then walk the boardwalk to coney Island and take the subway home from there.

There's also the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. We always go to the one in the Bronx, but the one in Brooklyn is supposed to be bigger, I think?

Remember, I'm from Hawaii. I will need a ski jacket to brave that 56 degree weather as it is.
