OK, I'm headed back, but Young is still there for a few days. The most awesome thing we did (of course) was to meet the other TS4Ms gang while there. Had a great time. We also walked the Brooklyn Bridge and wound up at the Fulton St. area for awhile.

One thing that never fails to impress is Monday night at Birdland, where (for a $10 cover plus $10 minimum) you get to listen to an amazing array of talent play and sing an amazing array of music. Last night, there were too many to mention, but I can think of four that stood out where, when they were done with their music, we looked at each other and said simply, "Wow." It's so good because it's Birdland. No other Open Mike Night could garner such an amazing array of talented people. But because it's in New York, and most of the shows are off on Mondays, you get the performers from the shows, from clubs around town, and professionals from all over the world who just want a chance to play at Birdland. We heard some of the performers from "Jazz at Lincoln Center," and some from other venues around the city. There was one woman from England (Zoe Lewis) who played the piano like nobody's business and sang a New Orleans song called "God of Love" who was astonishing. A violinist (Edit - I just remembered his name: Aaron Weinstein) who plays with John Pizzarelli who did a piece on his own, and then jammed with Hilary Kole. Trevor Exter played "Use Me," accompanying himself on the Cello (See a youtube recording of it here). Christine Lavin is always fun, and too many others to mention.

I think it's a must-not-miss when in NYC on a Monday night, and for those of you who live there and never get into the city, it's at 44th between 8th and 9th. Hop on the subway, get thee to Birdland on a Monday night (between 10 pm and 1 am) and remember why it's a great thing to live in New York.

We also did Katz's twice, had Chinese food three times, had Cuban food one night, walked everywhere until we could not feel our feet, had Guss', did the Tenement Museum, and spent a way-too-crowded day at the MOMA.

Everything we do in NYC is astonishing, but I would say that Birdland is usually the show-stopper each trip.

I'm glad you had such a good time in my favorite city. Sorry I was out of town and missed you. Birdland is a great choice, and their Sunday night show is also great - it's their "house" afro-cuban big band, really phenomenal performances. Sunday and Monday are both slow/dark theatre nights, so it's always a great alternative for visitors. I am going to stop recommending MOMA, it really has gotten way too crowded, though with its proximity to the Manhattan Club it can be worth a stop depending on day/time. I have yet to walk the Brooklyn Bridge. I swore I would do it last year but it rained the day we set aside. This summer I'm going.
