  • UGH, school starting before Labor Day!!!

I can't believe our district is starting on September 2nd next year.

All those great exchange possibilities the last week in August (one of which I booked in lieu of the prior week).

This has only happened once before in the last 10 years, I never thought they'd do it again

Wow, we are starting on the 7th and I thought all of us on LI started the same day.

Hey, I don't feel bad for you at all. Younger dd has to be in Florida by August 8 to start school. Luckily our summer trip to Hawaii is in July and we'll be home (at least for a week) before we leave to take her back.

When we bought our Maui timeshare we bought a fixed date of August 27 - September 2. We thought that would be fine, since school always started after Labor Day. We were fine for a few years, then bingo, the district changed and schools started before Labor Day. That's when we started trading the Maui unit and started visiting other islands.

Our district switched to the Wed. before Labor Day back in 1978. We had a huge blizzard that January and had to really scramble to make up days before the state required end of the school yr(I think it was June 21). We even had Spring Break cancelled and still had days to make up!

So by moving the start of school up a week, it gives the district an extra week to make up snow days beyond the 5 "snow" days we get.

It makes it easy for us to catch some of the early June trades as the kids get out this yr on June 4 or whatever date the 1st Thursday in June is.

Oh, what a shame. It really doesn't seem fair to start school before Labor Day.....Can't tell you how happy I am now that I'm no longer dealing with the school calendar.

But we don't have snow where I am. Still trying to figure out the rationale for moving the date.

August isn't ever a vacation month for us. School starts second week in Aug. when it's like 110 here...

But, like Twinkstarr, we usually take off for vacation the week after we get out which opens up late May/Early June weeks that seem to come easier than full on summer. It's a trade off, I suppose.

But, I do feel your pain. I'd love that traditional Labor Day signaling the end of summer...it just seems right. We have the day off-but that's it-not the same feeling.

It's very different on LI, tho......Our summers (true warm weather) start way later than many parts of the country, so it's important to get every single week in August, including those first few days in Sept. And besides, everyone knows summer isn't over until after Labor Day.

BTW, even my DD's college in Manhattan doesn't begin until after Labor Day.

Yeah, it makes sense for the hotter parts of the country to do it differently, but here, summer really starts in July and ends at Labor Day. We can get some great days in June, but it's "iffier."

I am in some real trouble over this, btw, it is throwing a major monkeywrench into my Newport plans.

I taught for lots of years in Colorado; school started shortly after the middle of August--first Monday or so after the middle of the month. Hard to feel sorry for you Labor Day people.

Getting out at the end of may would make for a great couple of weeks of timesharing.

Michigan is similar. By law, as of a year or two ago, schools cannot start any earlier than the day after Labor Day.
